Lees, 34, joined the Gladiators in the summer of 2020 and has previously played for the likes of Stockport, Ashton United, Altrincham and Hyde United.
He said: “It’s down to personal reasons that I both need and I want to be closer to home.
“This has been an incredibly difficult decision for me to make but it’s the right one for me and my family. Matlock Town is a fantastic club who have treated me brilliantly and I’d like to thank you all personally for welcoming me into your club and wish you all the best for the future. I’ve made many friends at Matlock, the fans have been top class and I’ll miss you all."
Matlock will retain the NPL registration of Lees, who is based in Ashton-under-Lyne.
Manager Martin Carruthers added: "Leesy-an absolutely fantastic professional with a superb attitude. I really didn’t expect him playing against Belper or Gainsborough but full credit to him, he’s different class. Family’s so important, so we all wish him well in and out of football."
Matlock are back in action this Saturday in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division, at home to Morpeth Town.
