Ramsbottom United joint managers Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley have signalled their intent to secure a play-off spot by signing former Rams star Ewan Purcell after he returned from playing in the United States.

The midfielder-cum-striker moved to America to play professionally for the San Antonio Scorpians, pictured, after his 16 goals from midfield in the 2004-05 campaign helped the Rams to a fifth placed finish in the North West Counties League.

Purcell was a member of then manager Derek Egan's acclaimed squad, winning the hearts of fans with his attitude and goals during 35 appearances that season, eight coming on from the bench.

The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League club say their joint managers moved quickly to bring the 27-year-old Bolton born forward back to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium as they are targeting back-to-back promotions and believe his experience and goals will be a vital addition to their squad in the run-in.

The forward could make his debut on Tuesday night when the fifth placed Rams are at home to Burscough in Evo-Stik NPL First Division North action and spokesman Tony Cunnigham said: "Anthony and Bernard moved swiftly to sign him back on for the Rams. He was an extremely popular player during his short time with the club before and his return will be welcomed by Rams supporters."
