Saturday's FA Cup action review

FA Cup Second Qualifying Round

The only real 'shock' result involving Blue Square Bet North clubs in Saturday's FA Cup Second Qualifying Round matches was at the Turnbull Ground where Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division's basement side Whitby Town edged out Droylsden by the odd goal in seven, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

But there were shocks elsewhere as Tadcaster Albion comprehensively beat Evo-Stik NPL First Division North Skemersdale United from two leagues above them 4-1 at home while Ossett Albion beat North Ferriby United 2-1 away.

Whitby looked to be coasting as they led Conference North outfit Droylsden 2-0 with goals from Nathan Mulligan after 16 minutes and Alex White in the 72nd. But the Bloods reduced the arrears through Lee Rick two minutes later, only for Steve Snaith to make it 3-1 just three minutes after that.

A replay then looked on the cards as first Ibrahim Hassan lobbed his own keeper six minutes from time and then Nat Kerr immediately made it 3-3. However, a real cup thriller saw Mulligan pop up with the Seasiders' winner in the final minute.

Skelmersdale were 2-0 down at Tadcaster to a Steven Jeff penalty and a Callum Ward strike on 21 minutes before Josh Hine pulled one back on 27 minutes. But Ward scored twice after the break on 49 and 64 minutes to complete his hat-trick and send them through.

At North Ferriby Gary Bradshaw gave the hosts a fifth minute lead before Ossett Town hit back with a penalty from Thomas Corner on 34 minutes and the winner from Darol Lucas a minute before the break.

Elsewhere, a fight back from being three goals down was not enough as Evo-stik NPL First Division North side Warrington Town bowed out 3-2 at Colwyn Bay.

After a slow start it was the hosts who took the lead on 25 minutes when Danny Lloyd was put through and kept his cool to slot the ball home. Warrington had their own chances as Kevin Townson and John Miles both failed to convert good opportunities and then five minutes before the break Bay again used the long ball for the lively Rob Hopley to score.

The second half had barely started and Bay were three-up as they again beat Warrington's defence with the long ball as Hopley slotted home his second. The hosts then made the mistake of sitting back and Warrington were eventually back in the game on 75 minutes when Michael Reid was felled in the box and Kevin Townson stepped up to convert the penalty.

Suddenly Warrington looked the better team and when substitute Lee McEvilly headed home in the 90th minute it set up a grandstand finish.

It took a 78th minute James Walshaw goal to separate Conference North high-flyers Guiseley from Evo-Stik NPL First Divisio North Bamber Bridge at Irongate, while Brig's league rivals Curzon Ashton bowed out 3-1 at the Tameside Stadium against Bradford Park Avenue, whose Alex Davidson gave them a 21st minute lead. But Kristian Dennis equalised on the hour-mark, only for Danny Holland to bag a brace for Avenue in the 68th and 80th minute.

There were eight goals in the game at Coronation Park between Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division strugglers Eastwood Town and their former league rivals Histon.

A good deal of change has happened at both clubs since they last met less than six months ago, but when Anthony Griffiths Jnr gave the Badgers a 29th minute lead, an upset looked on the cards.

But three goals in three minutes just past the hour-mark from new signing Saul Otobo with two and Jim Stevenson turned the game in the Stutes' favour. Griffiths Jnr reduced the arrears to one in the 69th minute, only for Otobo to complete his hat-trick 10 minutes later and Grant Roberts to make it 5-2 with seven minutes remaining – rendering Greg Simmons' last-minute reply as only a consolation.

Blyth Spartans and Workington were also rivals until Spartans suffered relegation at the end of last season, but they will have to meet again next week after a 1-1 Croft Park draw in which Will Vaulks looked to have taken the Reds through with a 26th minute effort that Tom Berj finally cancelled out in stoppage time at the end of the game.
