FA Trophy First Round Proper

Buxton take pride of place among the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League clubs playing in Saturday’s FA Trophy First Round Proper after holding Conference Premier leaders Grimsby Town to a goalless draw at Blundell Park, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Bucks performed their heroics in front of a crows of 1,369 while Evo-Stik NPL First Division South King’s Lynn Town recorded their own triumph to book their place in the next round, a crowd of 488 braving Saturday's storms to see the 1-0 win at NPL Premier Division Worksop Town's Sandy Lane. Russ Dunkley scored the only goal of the game with less than three minutes left.

For NPL First Division North side Skelmersdale United and Premier Division outfit Matlock Town, it was a case of almost but not quite against higher level opponents.

Skem travelled to Conference North Boston United`s Jakeman’s Stadium and came away with a deserved replay in front of a crowd of 710.

Boston, like Bath, have a disappointing Trophy record and fell behind six minutes after half-time to a goal from former Chelsea and Manchester United youngster Kenny Strickland. But the visitors could only hold that lead for 13 minutes as Spencer Weir-Daley equalised to take the tie back to the West Lancashire College Stadium.

Matlock travelled to Conference Premier Mansfield Town and also shared a 1-1 draw in front of 1,615 at Field Mill.

Adam Murray gave the Stags a 24th minute lead that Lewis McMahon cancelled out seven minutes before half-time to eventually earn the Gladiators a Causeway Lane replay.

Hednesford Town were among the Evo-Stik NPL sides who bowed out against Conference opposition, the NPL Premier Division hosts beaten 2-1 at Keys Park by the Conference North’s Solihull Moors.

But the Moors had to come back from being a 20th minute Dave MacPherson goal behind to win, courtesy of Junior English after 31 minutes and Omar Bogle five minutes before the break.

Hednesford’s league rivals Stafford Rangers – winners in 1972 and 79 – were comprehensively beaten 4-0 at Marston Road by Conference Premier Southport, runners-up themselves in 1998.

Chris Almond gave Port an early fifth minute lead that Steven Tames added to just after the break. Andy Owens on 58 minutes and then Tames 15 minutes from time wrapped up a comfortable win for the visitors.

Another NPL Premier side, Rushall Olympic, were unable to cause an upset in North Wales as they were hammered 5-0 by Conference Premier promotion-chasers Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

Player-manager Andy Morrell helped himself to a hat-trick with goals in the 15th, 17th and 88th minutes, while Adrian Cieslewicz netted a brace in the 67th and 90th minutes.

NPL First Division North Ossett Town were no match for Conference Premier Stockport County at Edgeley Park, bowing out 6-0.

In front of a crowd of 1,679 the on-loan Connor Jennings grabbed a hat-trick in the 10th, 39th and 55th minutes, Danny Hattersley a brace in the 16th and 79th and Danny Rose the other 15 minutes from time.
