Evo-Stik NPL First Division North

Skelmersdale United lifted the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North championship on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Tommy Lawson's side won 4-0 at home to Farsley FC to clinch the championship with more than two weeks of the season to go. Mark Jackson gave the home side the lead right on half-time and almost immediately after the restart Mattie Hughes doubled their advantage.

Josh Hine took his tally for the season to date to twenty-one with the third after 53 minutes, with Hughes netting his second and Skem's third on the hour-mark.

Who goes up with Lawson's boys is still far from certain. In fact no-one has yet to completely cement their place in the play-offs, although it would take a major loss of form for New Mills to miss out now as they still have five games to play and eased to a 4-0 home win over Harrogate Railway Athletic to stay second.

Chris Luby bagged a brace in the 18th and 22nd minutes to give the Millers a great start and then Sam Egerton on the hour-mark and Michael Fish a minute from time completed a comfortable win.

Ramsbottom United moved into third after a victory by the same margin over fellow contenders Mossley at Seel Park. Lee Gaskell scored twice in the opening 16 minutes and then Grant Spencer also bagged a couple in the 56th and 65th minutes.

Trafford's surprise 2-1 Shawe View defeat by lowly Prescot Cables also opened up the play-off race again. Will Ahern put the home side in front after 19 minutes but Carl Furlong equalised four minutes later. The game looked to be heading for a draw when Jack Webb won it for Cables in injury-time.

That opened the door again for Cammell Laird, Clitheroe and Curzon Ashton, although the latter's chances are minimal after sharing a 1-1 draw at the Tameside Stadium with fellow contenders Clitheroe, whose Scott Bakkor popped up with an 84th minute equaliser after Matty Kay had given the hosts the lead just before half-time.

Cammell Laird are the favourites to gate crash the current top five as they still have four games remaining after being another side to hit four on their travels on Saturday. They won at bottom-markers Garforth Town with goals from Craig Cairns after seven minutes and then Joe Holt on 72, Michael Grogan four minutes later and John Couch three minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Lancaster City let another two-goal lead slip in their final home game of the season at the Giant Axe. Neil Marshall and Rory Winters gave City a two-goal lead by the 52nd minute before goals from Bill Law on 55 minutes and a penalty from Neil Towler eight minutes later earned the third-bottom Vikings a share of the spoils.

Four-nil was a popular scoreline on Saturday and Bamber Bridge also achieved that tally at Irongate against Ossett Town, courtesy of goals from Ryan Thompson after 15 minutes, Andy Bell four minutes after half-time, Dan Wilkins on 53 minutes and Ali Waddecar seven minutes from the end.

Warrington Town won 2-0 at Dimple Wells against Ossett Albion with goals from Liam Dawson and Ciaran Kilheeney in the final 18 minutes, while Salford City and Radcliffe Borough shared a 1-1 derby draw at Moor Lane with Jamie Rother's 42nd minute penalty being cancelled out by Jake Pollard 14 minutes from time.
