Saturday's First Division South action review

Evo-Stik NPL First Division South

It's now advantage King's Lynn Town in the race for the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South title following Saturday's round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Long-time leaders Coalville Town are almost handing the title to the Linnets after a poor recent run of form that has seen them not win in six games after a 2-1 defeat at the Lyme Valley Stadium.

Aaron Carter gave the home side a 21st minute lead that Josh Gordon eventually doubled in the 83rd minute. Callum Woodward pulled one back for the Ravens a couple of minutes later but they couldn't find a leveller and subsequently lost top spot to Lynn, who beat play-off chasing Sutton Coldfield Town 2-0 at The Walks.

A crowd of 686 saw Dan Jacob bag a brace for Gary Setchell's side in the 55th and 66th minutes. The win puts them two points clear at the top and leaves Sutton Coldfield out of the top five.

Chasetown have now leap-frogged the Royals into fifth after hammering Sheffield FC 5-1 at The Scholars. Paul Sullivan gave the hosts the boost of an early fifth minute lead that Nick Wellecomme added to 16 minutes later.

Sullivan made it 3-0 with his second seven minutes after that and although James Gregory reduced the deficit right on half-time, Simon Brown on the hour-mark and Wellecomme again three minutes later completed their nap hand.

Belper Town look likely to take third place at least after winning 3-0 on the 3G at Coles Lane against Romulus, courtesy of goals from the in-form Jon Froggatt after 29 minutes, Glyn Cotton on 58 minutes and Shaun Tuton 15 minutes from time.

Stamford AFC are the other favourites for a top five slot, but they were beaten 2-1 at Kettering Road by a Rainworth Miners Welfare side who celebrated the decision to remain in the NPL with goals from Kieran Watson and Kieran Wells in the final 15 minutes after Ricky Miller had given the Daniels an early seventh minute lead.

Halesowen Town kept in contention after easing to a 4-0 win at Watnall Road against a now relegated Hucknall Town side following Rainworth's u-turn.

Ben Haseley took his tally for the season to thirty-three with a first half double and then a brace of own goals in the final seconds from Michael Yates and Josh Stolworthy completed the scoring.

Mathematically, Northwich Victoria can still make the play-offs, but would need Chasetown and Halesowen to lose their remaining games. But they kept on the shirt-tails with a 2-0 Marston Road win over Brigg Town, thanks to Michael Clarke after 14 minutes and Danny Wisdom on 37 minutes.

Elsewhere, Leek Town will wonder `what if` after their 3-1 Harrison Park win over Mickleover Sports should see them finish in the top ten at least. Tim Grice bagged a brace in the 20th and 39th minutes, and after Martin Smyth had replied right on half-time, Lee Morris added a third a minute from time.

Carlton Town completed a good 4-1 win at Market Drayton Town, with Julian Topliss netting a hat-trick in the 17th, 52nd and 71st minutes. Ruben Wiggins-Thomas made it 4-0 with 15 minutes to go, with Martyn Davies netting a late consolation for the hosts.

Loughborough Dynamo celebrated their new managerial appointment for next season by winning 3-1 at Ashby Avenue against managerless Lincoln United. Soon to be manager Tommy Brookbanks, won't be unhappy that Jamie Clarke bagged a brace for Dynamo after 22 and 74 minutes and, after Karl Cunningham had pulled one back from the spot, Carl Sibson added a third in time added on to seal the win.

Gresley FC won 2-1 at The Moat against another managerless outfit, Kidsgrove Athletic, with goals from Dean Rathbone and Jordan Gough in either half. Alan Nagington replied for the visitors from the spot 15 minutes from time.
