Saturday's First Division North action review

Evo-Stik NPL First Division North

Curzon Ashton maintained their 100 per cent start to the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North season but only just, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Goals from Simon Woodford and Matt Warburton gave the home side a 2-0 lead at half-time against Bamber Bridge. But Matt Lawlor reduced the deficit seven minutes after half-time only for Chris McDonagh to seemingly hand Curzon the points with a third 12 minutes from time. Mark Buchan had other ideas, pulling a second back for Brig in injury-time to make it for a nervy finale.

Lancaster City and Salford City also remain unbeaten after the latest round of action. The Dolly Blues won 3-1 at Station View against Harrogate Railway Athletic, whose Paul Beesley gave them an early third minute lead. Mark Jackson eventually pulled City back on terms five minutes into the second half and then goals in the final eight minutes from Glenn Steel and Danny Mahoney sealed the points for the visitors.

Salford won 2-1 at Moor Lane against new boys Padiham, leading 2-0 at the break through Nelson Mota and Lee Hodkinson goals, with Ed Crockett putting the away side back into the game on 65 minutes.

Darlington 1883 are second after edging out Clitheroe by the odd goal in five at Shaw Bridge. And it was a dramatic victory in front of an excellent 575 crowd as a second half comeback and an injury-time goal saw Darlington grab victory from the jaws of defeat. The Quakers were 2-0 down at the break as Jamie Campbell and Scott Bakkor were on target for the Lancastrians. But goals in the final eight minutes from Andy Johnson and a late Amar Purewal brace gave Quakers a thrilling win in stoppage time.

The opposite end of the table sees five clubs – Mossley, Burscough, Ossett Albion, Ramsbottom United and Radcliffe Borough - still searching for their first win of the 2013-14 season.

Mossley shared a six-goal draw at Stainton Park against Radcliffe, who looked as though they were going to break their duck when leading through goals from Caldon Henson and Danny White by the 64th minute. But Charlie Anderson, Sam Halligan and Andy Keogh turned that round to put the Lilywhites ahead with only two minutes remaining, when Doug Carroll levelled to show there's little wrong with Boro's spirit.

Amazingly, Burscough also shared six goals on their travels at Ingfield against Ossett Town. In their case it was the reverse of what happened at Radcliffe as it was the Linnets who led 3-1 with goals from Jordan Williams and a Mark Beesley brace – the first from the spot. Then Town battled back to level through Chris Wood and Steve Jeffs. He'd give them a fifth minute lead and struck again from the penalty spot five minutes from time to ensure his sides shared the points.

Ramsbottom also drew, sharing a 2-2 home draw with Northwich Victoria, whose Kieran Lugsden gave them a 12th minute lead. Owen Roberts on 21 minutes and Phil Dean on 37 gave Rammy the lead ahead of half-time before Alex Taylor equalised for the visitors on 52 minutes.

Ossett Albion were the only one of that quintet to lose on Saturday as they were beaten by a Warrington Town side who are now third. Peter Dogan gave the Wire an early eighth minute lead that Ciaran Kilheeney doubled from the spot six minutes from time.

Kendal Town went nap at home to Wakefield, with Zach Clark bagging a brace around efforts from Danny Mitchley, Maison McGeechan and Danny Coid. Prescot Cables went even better – hammering New Mills 7-1 at Valerie Park. Connor McCarthy and Robert Doran had to battle it out for the match ball after the game after both netted hat-tricks, with Isaac Kusaloka scoring their final goal in injury-time.

The other game between Farsley FC and Cammell Laird finished all-square at 2-2. But the hosts had to battle back in this one too as Craig Cairns after seven minutes, and Daley Woods just after half-time, had Laird 2-0 ahead at Throstle Nest. Lee Ellington began the fight back on 63 minutes and Aiden Savory equalised eight minutes later to complete their comeback.
