Saturday's First Division North action review

By David Watters

The EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North title race is a straight shoot-out between current leaders Farsley Celtic and Lancaster City who are a point behind after both won on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

An own goal from Lassana Naltache after 24 minutes and goals from Aaron Hardy after 35 minutes, Adam Clayton seven minutes later and then Lewis Nightingale on the hour-mark, saw Farsley to a dominant 4-0 victory against lowly Radcliffe Borough on a delightful day for football at Throstle Nest.

The Dolly Blues, who have a crucial game in hand, struggled to a 1-0 Giant Axe victory over a now virtually-doomed Goole AFC side, who are second-bottom, eight points behind Mossley AFC with just nine points left to play for.

Ryan Winder scored the all-important goal for City in the 67th minute while Tom Corner gave visiting Tadcaster Albion an early eighth minute lead before third-placed Colne came from behind to take all three points.

Despite being in the ascendancy in the first 45 minutes, Tadcaster went into the break behind after an unlucky own goal from Liam Shepherd before a Phil Dean tap-in right on the whistle saw Colne take the lead.

The Reds held off the Brewers at the start of the second half before Mark Ayres headed in on 71 minutes and a controversial second from Dean nine minutes later wrapped up the points for the Lancashire outfit.

The race for the three other play-off places is very tight and still involves seven clubs, with ninth-placed Clitheroe having a game in hand.

Colne are two points clear of the chasing pack, but Trafford, Ossett Town and Glossop North End are all level on 66 points.

Trafford could only manage a 2-2 home draw with Kendal Town, despite leading 2-0 with goals from Andy Keogh after 19 minutes and Aaron Burns on the hour-mark.

Goals in the final four minutes from Matt Dudley and Adam Freeland salvaged a point for the Mintcakes.

Ossett did their chances of finishing in the play-offs a power of good with a 5-0 mauling of Ramsbottom United at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium.

A Dean Stott own goal after just eight minutes set the tone for out-of-form Rammy, who conceded a second to Danny Frost after 26 minutes.

Andy Hawksworth added a third just six minutes after the break and Town wrapped up a comfortable win with goals from Nathan Curtis after 64 minutes and Jason Yates in stoppage time.

Glossop`s top five hopes took a real battering, and it will be interesting to see what a 7-2 hammering at relegation-threatened Prescot Cables does to their confidence.

Cables, who are now virtually safe, were in rampant mood, with Chris Almond helping himself to a hat-trick and Lloyd Dean and Josh Dolling braces while Max Leonard and Adam Jones were on target for the Hillmen.

Scarborough Athletic are now just a couple of points behind Glossop after hammering relegated Burscough 5-0 at Queensgate in front of 487.

It was all over bar the shouting by half-time with Boro leading 4-0 with goals from Jacob Hazel, Cameron Murray and a Benny Igiehon double. Billy Logan netted a fifth in the 78th minute.

Brighouse Town are two points further back after beating Bamber Bridge 2-0 at home, thanks to Ben Wharton after 24 minutes and Mike Fish on the hour-mark.

Clitheroe came back from 4-2 down to draw 4-4 t Ewen Fields against Hyde United.

It was 1-1 at the break with Leon Osbourne for the Tigers and Kurt Willoughby for the Blues. Alex Newby then put the visitors in front two minutes after the restart but a Perel Omry brace on 50 and 65 minutes took the Tigers ahead and Harry Coates made it 4-2.

In the end, goals in the final nine minutes from Dimitri Tuanzebe and Bradley Carroll earned Clitheroe a point that keeps them interested in the top five race.

Mossley are still not completely safe after losing 3-0 at Seel Park to Colwyn Bay, for whom the prolific Jamie Rainford netted twice, sandwiched by a Will Booth effort.

Elsewhere, Droylsden won 4-0 at Dimple Wells against Ossett Albion, courtesy of Jack Rudge, Ciaran Kilheeney, Adam Farrell and Will Hasler-Cregg.
