Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Stafford Rangers missed the opportunity to extend their advantage at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Rangers were held to a 2-2 Marston Road draw by third-placed Coalville Town, who fell behind as early as the second minute to a Dean Freeman own goal but led through Jared Holmes on 28 minutes and then Nialle Rodney on the hour-mark before Ben Haseley pulled Rangers level 10 minutes from time.

Market Drayton Town`s good form continued with a 3-1 win at Daventry Town to leap-frog the Northamptonshire side into fourth spot.

All the goals came in the second half with Scott Ryan, Craig Ryan and Paul McMullen putting the visitors` three-up before Joe Curtis replied near the end from the spot.

Managerless Spalding United moved to within a point of the top five after a fine 3-0 win at Harrison Park against fancied Leek Town.

Jake Newman gave the Tulips a 24th minute lead that Paul Walker eventually doubled just shy of the hour-mark, with Josh Moreman making sure the points went back to Lincolnshire with a third 19 minutes from time.

Sheffield FC dropped two points at home against bottom-markers Tividale.

Club led 2-0 with goals from James Gregory after seven minutes and Conor Glavin on 26 minutes before Malachi Farquaharson replied on the half-hour mark.

But Benny Igiehon made it 3-1 just six minutes later. Farquaharson then reduced the deficit in the 68th minute before Jordan Cullinane-Liburd equalised with less than two minutes remaining.

Romulus moved level on points with Sheffield in eighth after edging out Goole AFC by the odd goal in five at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

The Vikings though led 2-0 with goals from Matt Semley on 22 minutes and Nick Guest 10 minutes later. Liam Holt replied six minutes before the break and then Luke Keen levelled seven minutes after the restart, and bagged the winner 18 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo were beaten 3-1 by neighbours Gresley FC, whose Gary Ricketts and Jordan Ball gave them a 2-0 interval lead and then Joe Pheasant scored at both ends in the second period!

Rugby Town pulled two points clear of the drop zone after beating Newcastle Town 2-1 at Butlin Road, thanks to a third minute Callum Powell effort and a Kevin Thornton spot-kick on 32 minutes – Kyle Blake threatening a comeback with a 71st minute reply.

And Belper Town moved four clear of the bottom four after winning 3-1 at Chasetown, courtesy of an Evan Garnett hat-trick after 27, 31 and 79 minutes – Rhys Thompson netting the Scholars reply on 56 minutes.
