Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

The fans, players and officials of Stafford Rangers can enjoy a happy Christmas as they go into the festive period leading the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table by a very healthy nine points, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Saturday saw Rangers win 2-0 at Sheffield FC, with goals from Josh Craddock after 41 minutes and Christian Dacres seven minutes after the break.

Second-placed Coalville Town edged out Stocksbridge Park Steels 2-1 at Owen Street, Aaron Hooton giving the Ravens a sixth minute lead that Corey Gregory cancelled out after 35 minutes. But five minutes before the break a second from Hooton restored Coalville`s lead which they held on to.

Rangers will head into 2016 looking virtually certain to at least finish in the play-off places as they lead sixth-placed Basford United by a whopping twenty-one points. It would take a Chelsea-style drop in form for that to happen!

Shaw Lane Aquaforce, Spalding United and Daventry Town occupy the other top five spots, but only the latter managed a win on Saturday – 2-1 at bottom side Tividale, whose Chris Sterling gave them a 77th minute lead from the spot, only for Mitch Piggon, also from the spot, and Edilson Panzo-Antonio to win it for Dav in the final six minutes.

Shaw Lane`s game was off, but the Tulips lost 3-2 at the Sir Halley Stewart Field to the team now in sixth, Basford, whose Ruben Wiggins-Thomas was the hero with a hat-trick in the 44th, 69th and 74th minutes. Jamie Graham had given Spalding a 22nd minute lead and Nathan Stainfield got there other five minutes after the break.

Rugby Town pushed themselves well clear of the drop zone after a 3-1 win at Butlin Road against play-off chasing Market Drayton Town.

Three goals in seven minutes midway through the first half from David Kolodynski with two and Kevin Thornton saw off Will Whieldon`s reply eight minutes before the break.

Kidsgrove Athletic went nap at Coles Lane on the 3G against Romulus. Jack Sherratt opened the Grove scoring after 36 minutes and Anthony Malbon, a Jordan Johnson brace and Paul Taylor a couple of minutes from the end completed the rout.

Third-bottom Loughborough Dynamo`s new joint bosses saw their team lose 3-1 at Leek Town, whose Dan Shelley gave them a second minute lead from the spot. Eddy Samba levelled on 26 minutes, but Chris Baker and a James Martin own goal saw Leek home.

Carlton Town are second-bottom and were edged out at home by a last-gasp Lincoln United winner after Anthony Howell had pulled back Rob Norris and Nathan Whitehead`s openers for United. Sean Wright popped up with the visitors` winner in injury-time.

Danny Edwards gave Chasetown a sixth minute lead at home to Gresley FC. Jack Langston equalised five minutes after the break but just a minute later Ryan Wynter won it for the Scholars.

Rob Stevenson and Evan Garnett had Belper Town 2-0 up by the 28th minute at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds against Goole AFC in what turned out to be a 3-3 draw.

Nick Guest with two and Aaron Moxam with a single, pulled the hosts level and then put them ahead by the 43rd minute, only for Alex Steadman to equalise on the stroke of half-time from the spot.
