Saturday's First Division South action review

By David Watters

Stafford Rangers moved seventeen points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday night with a 2-1 win over neighbours Newcastle Town 2-1, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In one of only four games to survive the wet weather, a crowd of 541 at Marston Road saw Rangers` Peter Till miss an early penalty and then `Castle skipper Tim Sanders give his side a 33rd minute lead with a stunning drive.

Rangers` captain Christian Dacres equalised on the stroke of half-time. And Ben Haseley completed the turnaround in the second half with a 63rd minute winner.

Spalding United returned to the top five after beating Kidsgrove Athletic 2-1 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields.

Tom Waumsley gave the Tulips an early fourth minute lead that a Ben Chapman own goal doubled eight minutes later. Anthony Malbon reduced the arrears after 20 minutes but neither side could find another goal.

Spalding leap-frogged Chasetown after the Scholars suffered a 2-0 defeat at Bracken Moor against a Stocksbridge Park Steels outfit who are now just two points behind them in ninth.

Joe Lumsden gave Steels the lead on the half-hour mark. Scott Ruthven made sure with a second goal 14 minutes from time.

Bottom-markers Tividale picked up their eighth draw of the campaign to date in a 2-2 stalemate against third-bottom Goole AFC at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.

Demetri Brown gave the visitors a 15th minute lead that Aaron Moxam cancelled out seven minutes later.

The Vikings looked like losing when Chris Sterling put Tividale in front with less than eight minutes to go but Nick Guest rescued a point for the hosts in stoppage time.
