Rugby were looking to continue a run towards the top five, but in front of a crowd of 517 at Butlin Road Ben Haseley scored the only goal of the game on 48 minutes to win it for Rangers.
Leek Town maintained their top five challenge after beating Coalville 4-1 at Harrison Park.
Tim Grice after five minutes and Kyle Diskin eight minutes later had Leek in command. Alex Troke reduced the deficit from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second half before Diskin again on 73 minutes and Omar Haughton five minutes from time sealed a good win for Lee Casswell`s side.
The rest of the top five all won. Shaw Lane Aquaforce were comfortable 3-0 home winners over mid-table Market Drayton Town, thanks to Lee Bennett after 36 minutes, on-loan James Walshaw just before the break and then Gavin Allott in stoppage time at the end.
Basford United made it five wins from five games with a 2-0 win at Christchurch Meadow against Belper Town.
The hosts did not make it easy for them, despite playing for an hour with ten-men after Belper keeper Danny Haystead was sent-off and Eugen Bopp placed the resulting free-kick past replacement keeper Charlie Mansfield to give Basford the lead. The second half was an even affair, but Stuart Hendrie putting Basford in control with the second goal after 61 minutes.
And Chasetown sealed a 2-0 home win over fourth-bottom Carlton Town with goals from George Washbourne after 14 minutes and James Dance on 38 minutes.
Lincoln United and Spalding United both maintained their top five challenge with 4-0 home wins.
United saw off Kidsgrove Athletic at Ashby Avenue with a Sean Wright hat-trick in the 51st, 61st and 80th minutes, sandwiched by a Jack McGovern penalty.
The Tulips beat third-bottom Goole AFC with Tom Waumsley repeating Wright`s feat with goals in the 20th, 57th and 68th minutes – Dan Bannister with the other on 49 minutes.
Goole are looking nervously over their shoulders after second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo picked up a point from a goalless draw at Newcastle Town and are now only four points adrift of the Vikings.
Sheffield FC beat Gresley FC 3-1 at home, thanks to a Brian Cusworth brace and one from Ross Goodwin – Martyn Smyth replying, while Romulus saw off troubled Daventry Town 4-0 at Coles Lane with goals from Chad Degville-Cross in the first minute, Jake Donnelly in the sixth, Mark Danks and Luke Keen adding two more before the break.
