Saturday's First North action review

By David Watters

Lancaster City remain four points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North table after edging out fellow promotion contenders Farsley Celtic by the odd goal in five on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Despite dominating the game at the Giant Axe for 75 minutes, Farsley blew a two-goal lead given to them by Richard Marshall`s penalty for handball, after 20 minutes and Adam Clayton after 70 minutes. Ryan Winder reduced the deficit five minutes later and then, with less than three minutes remaining, Winder equalised with his second of the game.

And as the game headed into stoppage time, the Dolly Blues snatched all three points when Jordan Connerton`s pass found Craig Carney, who slotted home. Farsley are now nine points behind Lancaster with three games in hand.

Ossett Town maintained their challenge in second after a good 3-0 win at Shawbridge against another play-off contender, Clitheroe.

Alex Peterson gave Town a good start with a goal inside four minutes and Harrogate Town loanee Marcus Day doubled that 30 minutes later. Ashley Jackson made sure the points went back over the Pennines to Yorkshire with a third in the 68th minute.

Trafford are third, two points behind Ossett, after winning at bottom-markers Burscough by the same scoreline.

A goal in the very first minute from Lee Neville gave the visitors a massive boost and then Aaron Burns` brace after 35 and 65 minutes, killed the game off as a contest.

Scarborough Athletic`s challenge, however, stumbled at Ewen Fields against Hyde United.

Boro started well enough and led through Craig Nelthorpe`s 13th minute effort. But the Tigers led at the break with goals from Matty Beadle after 35 mminutes and a James Branker goal a minute before the whistle.

Branker`s second 10 minutes from time ensured the points were Hyde`s, although recent signing Matthew Lucid did manage a second for Boro in stoppage time.

That meant Colne moved level on points with fifth-placed Scarborough after they won 2-1 at home against Mossley AFC.

Mark Ayres` eighth minute penalty and an Oliver Wood second on 25 minutes saw the hosts two-up. Kyle McGonigle`s spot-kick halved the arrears three minutes later but the Lilywhites weren`t able to find a leveller.

Brighouse Town`s 2-1 home win over third-bottom Prescot Cables leaves them just three points off a top five spot.

Former Mossley favourite Mike Fish bagged a brace on debut for Brighouse in the 74th and 81st minutes, with Dominic Reid replying four minutes from time.

Glossop North End are also still in contention, being level on points with Brighouse, and that despite losing 2-0 at Irongate to Bamber Bridge, whose Jamie Milligan from the spot after 25 minutes and then Stuart Vasey seven minutes from the end, were on the mark.

Second-bottom Goole AFC were beaten 1-0 at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds by Radcliffe Borough, for whom Elliot Rokka pounced in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, loan signing Steve Yawson bagged a brace for Kendal Town in the final five minutes as the Mintcakes won 2-1 at Colwyn Bay, who had led through Scott Bakkor`s early seventh minute opener.

Ramsbottom United eased to a 4-0 win at Dimple Wells against Ossett Albion, courtesy of goals from Gareth Seddon from the spot, Reagan Ogle, Nathan Webb and Paul Linwood – all in the opening 45 minutes.

Droyslden edged out visiting Tadcaster Albion by the odd goal in seven in a remarkable game at the Butcher`s Arms.

Remarkable as the Yorkshire side led 3-0 with goals from Josh Greening on 23 and 51 minutes, sandwiched by a 45th minute Tom Corner effort. But the Bloods fought back and took the game with Scott Metcalfe, Dominic Smith, Liam Caddick and then Jamie Frost in stoppage time all on target.
