Saturday's First North action review

By David Watters

Leaders Lancaster City`s seven-game unbeaten run in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division North came to an end on Saturday with play-off chasing Brighouse Town winning 3-2 at the Giant Axe, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Dolly Blues now head the way by six points after second-placed Farsley Celtic won an amazing game 5-4 at Hyde United.

Just under 300 saw Tom Haigh put visiting Brighouse in front after less than three minutes. But a brace around the half-time interval from Craig Carney and Tom Kilifin sent City into the break in front.

But a second for Haigh just before the hour-mark and then a Ben Atkinson effort just as the last minute ticked in, won it for Brighouse to leave them five points adrift of the top five but with a couple of games in hand on most around them.

Hyde and Farsley were involved in a nine-goal thriller that also saw three red cards – all great entertainment for the 438 crowd at Ewen Fields.

Jordan Deacy gave the visitors an early second minute lead. That was it until seven minutes after the break when Hyde struck twice early on through Matty Beadle and Kyle Harrison.

At 2-1, Hyde`s Paddy Miller was dismissed for violent conduct and he was followed for an early shower by Farsley striker James Walshaw. Chris Howarth then equalised on 66 minutes and Janni Lipka put Hyde in front four minutes later.

Six minutes from time, Hyde went down to nine-men when James Burke conceded a penalty as last man and Richard Marshall made it 3-3 before Aidan Savory made it 4-3 to the visitors three minutes later.

But credit to the nine-men, who levelled through Lawrence Hunter as stoppage time approached. They couldn`t hang on though, Farsley winning it in time added on through Adam Clayton.

Third-placed Trafford dropped six points behind Farsley after being held to a 1-1 draw at another play-off chaser, Scarborough Athletic.

Both goals came late on, with Josh Granite breaking the deadlock for Trafford in the 83rd minute and Benny Igiehon equalising in stoppage time.

Fourth-placed Ossett Town`s game at Bamber Bridge was off, allowing Colne to move to within a point of the Yorkshiremen after a 4-0 home win against second-bottom Goole AFC.

Phil Dean scored the only first half goal for Colne but an Adam Morning brace on 55 and 60 minutes and Michael Morrison`s goal five minutes later sealed a comfortable win for the hosts.

Sixth-placed Glossop North End are just a point back after beating the side now directly below them, Clitheroe.

Ben Richardson`s goal three minutes from time won it for the hosts in front of a crowd of 337.

There was also only one goal – a 79th minute Lee Gaskell effort – that separated Ramsbottom United from hosts Tadcaster Albion to keep Rammy in the top five race.

At the opposite end of the table, bottom-markers Burscough are 13 points from safety after losing 2-1 at home to a Mossley AFC side who also needed the points and are now fourth-bottom.

Mitch Bryant gave the Lilywhites a 37th minute lead that Jonah O`Reilly cancelled out just before the hour-mark. Mason Duffy went on to win it for the visitors 18 minutes from time.

Third-bottom Prescot Cables picked up a point from a 1-1 home draw with Kendal Town, whose Rob Bowman cancelled out Dale Wright`s 49th minute opener in the 64th minute.

Elsewhere, Ossett Albion saw off Colwyn Bay 3-1 at Dimple Wells with goals from Ross Hardaker in the first half and James Eyles and Isaac Baldwin in the second – Gareth Grant replying.

And the derby at the Butcher`s Arms between Droylsden and Radcliffe Borough ended all-square at 3-3 with braces for the Bloods` recent recruit, Ciaran Kilheeney and for Boro`s Lewis Reilly.

Elliott Rokka kicked off the scoring in the 24th minute to put the visitors ahead with Domaine Rouse completing the hosts' comeback from 3-0 down with half an hour to play on 80 minutes.
