Saturday's First North action review

By David Watters

Colwyn Bay ended a twelve-match winless run on Saturday and their victims were the overnight leaders of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division North table, Lancaster City, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Jamie Rainford gave the North Walians a 20th minute lead at Llanelian Road and Danny Bartle made it 2-0 with two minutes of the second half played. The Dolly Blues` day ended with more misery as they had sub Louis Mayers dismissed two minutes from time.

That defeat allowed Farsley Celtic to take over top spot on goal difference following a 2-1 win against Yorkshire rivals Ossett Albion at Throstle Nest.

But the Celts had to come back from being a 66th minute Alex Boachie goal behind to win, thanks to Adam Clayton four minutes later and then Lewis Nightingale in the final minute of normal time.

The top two have a nine-point lead over third-placed Trafford, who beat Tadcaster Albion 3-1 at home.

Carl Stewart gave Taddy a great start with a goal inside the opening three minutes. But Andy Keogh responded within two minutes and the hosts went 2-1 up with only eight minutes gone through Ali Brown. Ashley Woods made sure with a third in the last seconds of the game.

Glossop North End and Colne now occupy the remaining top five spots after Ossett Town`s defeat, the Hillmen beating second-bottom Goole AFC 2-0 at home, thanks to goals in the final 10 minutes from Dale Johnson and Karl Jones

Colne inflicted an 8-0 drubbing on bottom-markers Burscough, who are seemingly doomed now, being 14 points adrift of the safety-mark with only seven games remaining.

The Lancastrians netted four in each half – Oliver Wood netting a first half hat-trick and adding a fourth in the second, while both Adam Morning and Mark Ayres both bagged braces in the rout.

Scarborough Athletic just about kept themselves in the race for a top five spot after winning 1-0 at Queensgate against Kendal Town, courtesy of a goal two minutes into the second half from Matt Turnbull.

However, Clitheroe`s hopes took a severe blow when they lost 2-1 at Seel Park to lowly Mossley AFC, who are now 12 points clear of the drop zone.

After trailing to a 16th minute Charlie Russell goal, the Lilywhites won it with a brace from Tom Pratt in the 34th and 37th minutes.

Third-bottom Prescot Cables moved eight points clear of second-bottom Goole after sharing a goalless draw at Valerie Park with Droylsden while Radcliffe Borough are a place and two points better off than Cables.

They shared a 1-1 derby draw at Ewen Fields against Hyde United, whose Lawrence Hunter cancelled out Dan Burns` 39th minute opener for Boro in the 77th minute.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Matt Lawlor, Regan Linney, Sam Staunton-Turner and Aaron Fleming all found the net as Bamber Bridge won 4-0 at Irongate against play-off chasing Ossett Town, while Brighouse Town and Ramsbottom United shared a 2-2 draw in Yorkshire – Lee Gaskell`s brace for Rammy being cancelled out by Ben Wharton and Michael Fish.
