Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Witton Albion, Newcastle Town and Romulus all made it three wins from their opening three matches of the new EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South season on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Witton, switched from the First Division North, left it very late before earning a 1-0 victory at Sheffield FC, courtesy of Prince Haywood`s stoppage time penalty.

Club remain searching for their first point of the new campaign while Newcastle won 3-1 at the Lyme Valley Stadium against a Basford United side yet to win.

The home side took an eighth minute lead through Chris Baker’s long cross-shot which beat Saul Deeney at the far post. Jon Beaumont made it 2-0 just five minutes later, heading in Baker’s cross.

Jacob Lovett pounced on a defensive mistake to make it 3-0 just four minutes from time, with Fabian Smith`s penalty two minutes later being just a consolation for Basford.

Romulus inflicted a first defeat on Lincoln United at Ashby Avenue.

United, who had drawn their opening two games, fell behind to a 28th minute Charisma Agbonlahor effort. Chad Degville-Cross eventually doubled Rom`s lead on 68 minutes, with Danny Brooks` spot-kick reply coming in injury-time.

In contrast, Kidsgrove Athletic join Sheffield in losing three out of three, David Kolodynski scoring the only goal just past the hour mark to earn visiting Rugby Town victory.

That was Valley`s first win and they were joined by AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Loughborough Dynamo in celebrating first three-point hauls on Saturday.

Fancied Diamonds inflicted a second defeat on Carlton Town in Nottingham, with Robbie Parsons bagging a brace in the 29th and 57th minutes. Shaun Rickford had equalised in the 54th minute but Lewis Leslie made sure with Diamonds` third in stoppage time.

Dynamo won 3-0 in Shropshire against Market Drayton Town.

Matt Gardner put the visitors ahead after 24 minutes. Jamie Clarke eventually doubled that just past the hour-mark and Jurelle Philip made sure with a third four minutes from time.

Shaw Lane AFC dropped their first points of the new season in drawing 1-1 at the Zeeco Stadium with Stamford AFC.

Kieran Lugsden`s 58th minute opener for the visitors looked to have won the game, until Tom Batchelor popped up with a Daniels` leveller in injury-time.

Spalding United recorded a second win, impressively 3-1 at Northwich Victoria who, like neighbours Witton, were switched from the north.

Nathan Whitehead gave the Tulips an early sixth minute lead that Bradley Wells added to on 28 minutes. Alex Byrne pulled Vics back into the game in the 71st minute but they weren`t able to find a leveller and Jon Lockie made them pay with a third for Spalding in stoppage time.

Chasetown and Belper Town shared a goalless draw at The Scholars, while Gresley FC and Leek Town ended 1-1 at The Moat.

Both goals came at opposites end of the match, with Ben Harris giving the Moatmen an early second minute lead that Leek eventually cancelled out in the 90th minute by Tim Grice.

It also ended all-square at the Ocal between Bedworth United and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

The visitors` first point of the new season came thanks to a brace from Kudakwashe Muskwe in the 51st and 68th minutes after Justin Marsden on eight minutes and Dan Creaney on 26 minutes, had given the Greenbacks a 2-0 lead.
