Saturday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

Buxton lead the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division table after Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And Ashton United, Whitby Town and Stafford Rangers all remain unbeaten, while Marine AFC suffered their first defeat of the 2016-17 season.

It was the leaders who ended the Mariners` run, sealing a 3-0 Silverlands victory with Jamie Jackson breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Bradley Grayson doubled the home side`s lead 10 minutes later and Fabrice Bembo-Leta added the icing on the cake with number three with 83 minutes gone on the clock.

Ashton inflicted a 2-0 defeat on rusty Ilkeston FC, playing their first game after their suspension was lifted.

Right on half-time, Mark Lees gave the visitors the lead. And then Jason Gorton added Ashton`s second after 64 minutes.

Whitby earned a 1-1 draw at relegated Hednesford Town, whose Joel Logan looked to have won it for the Pitmen when he broke the deadlock after 82 minutes. But Jamie Poole pulled the Seasiders back on level terms in stoppage time.

Stafford are still to lose since returning to the Premier Division as First Division South champions, but were held to their third draw in four games – a 4-4 thriller at Marston Road against a Skelmersdale United side who are yet to win.

It started well for Skem when recent signing Adam Mitter conceded an early sixth minute own goal. George Bowerman pulled Stafford level in the 15th minute and two minutes later Kyle Perry had them in front. The former Worcester City striker made it 3-1 in the 29th minute.

Chris Almond reduced the deficit two minutes later, only for George Cater to make it 4-2 just four minutes into the second half. But Dale Wright after 63 minutes and Daniel Burns with two minutes remaining pulled Skem back on terms.

It`s five out of five for Frickley Athletic – but it`s defeats for the Blues as they were beaten 4-0 at Westfield Lane by Mickleover Sports.

Adam Baskerville gave Sports a 34th minute lead and then two minutes later, two goals in a minute from Andy Dales made it 3-0.

Nathan Curtis had the chance to pull Frickley back into the game before half-time but he missed from the penalty spot. And then 6 minutes from time, Will Norcross made it 4-0 to the visitors.

Other Saturday winners were Blyth Spartans, Stourbridge, Warrington Town and Rushall Olympic. Spartans and the Glassboys both won away from home.

Michael Richardson gave Blyth a 64th minute breakthrough at The Meres against Grantham Town. Skipper Robbie Dale doubled the visitors` advantage four minutes later, and although Danny Meadows reduced the arrears from the spot two minutes later, the Gingerbreads weren`t able to find a leveller.

Stourbridge won 3-2 at the Weaver Stadium against a Nantwich Town side who have now won only once.

A Curtis Jones own goal gave the Glassboys a ninth minute lead that Luke Benbow added to less than three minutes later. But two goals just before half-time from Theo Stair and Ben Harrison pulled the Dabbers back on terms.

As a draw looked on the cards, Brandon Hague popped up with a last-gasp winner for Gary Hackett`s side. Newly-promoted Warrington made it two wins as a Premier Division side by winning 5-3 at Cantilever Park against Matlock Town.

The Yellows fought from 2-0 and 3-2 down to win and marked a welcome three points for Warrington following three successive defeats.

Marc Newsham after 15 minutes and Marcus Dinanga three minutes later had the Gladiators 2-0 up. Ciaran Kilheeney pulled one back five minutes before the break and then two minutes after it, Ben Deegan equalised.

Newsham restored Matlock`s lead 10 minutes later but Deegan again on 62 minutes and James McCartan two minutes later turned it round for the Wire, with Mike Grogan making sure with a fifth with seven minutes remaining.

Rushall`s third win came courtesy of a 34th minute Aaron Forde effort at Dales Lane against neighbours Halesowen Town.

Mark Anderson gave Spennymoor Town a 28th minute lead at Kirkby Road against Barwell. But the Moors` long journey home was spoiled somewhat by a 76th minute Niall Rowe equaliser.

Fortunately, Barwell`s neighbours Coalville Town didn`t have that far to travel to Corby Town. But they will have to do it all again as the game at Steel Park had to be abandoned after a summer storm flooded the pitch with the scores were level at 1-1 after 37 minutes.

Callum Ball had opened the scoring for Corby after 15 minutes before Karl Demidh scored after 34 minutes to level it up.
