Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

The EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South has new leaders after Spalding United were beaten at home by Leek Town on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Shaw Lane AFC took over top spot after winning 3-0 at Loughborough Dynamo, taking just over an hour to break Dynamo down with a goal from Kieran Lugsden. And on 69 minutes Gavin Allott doubled their advantage, with Alex Byrne adding the icing on the cake with number three in stoppage time.

At the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Fields, the Tulips had previously won four and drawn one of their five home league games but could find no way through Leek's resolute defence.

What proved to be the only goal of the game came on the half-hour mark when a corner taken by Jake Dunwoody saw Toby Mullarkey rise highest to head home from close range.

Spalding could not find a way through and the match looked to be petering out until some late drama when Niall Maguire committed a poor tackle on Jonny Lockie that sparked a mass melee in the 90th minute. Once things had calmed down, the Blues skipper was shown a straight red card.

Newcastle Town are third after beating fellow high-flyers Gresley FC by the same scoreline at the Lyme Valley Stadium.

However, it only took Castle three minutes to break through, although strictly it was the Moatmen who scored it, courtesy of a Jordan Wakeling own goal. Dan Cocks added a second seven minutes later but it wasn`t until a minute from time that Lee Cropper popped up with the third.

Witton Albion are fourth after a comprehensive 4-0 success on the 3G at the Oval against Bedworth United.

And it was a special day for Tolani Omatola, who scored a hat-trick with goals in the 41st, 57th and 61st minutes, with Rob Hopley scoring the other on 55 minutes.

Basford United are now in the top five after they beat Romulus and Stocksbridge Park Steels could only manage a draw with bottom-markers Rugby Town.

Basford are turning the 3G into a home fortress with a fourth successive win, this time 1-0 against a Romulus side who certainly can`t blame the pitch as they play on an artificial surface too at Coles Lane. Basford`s victory came courtesy of Ashley Grayson planting home a sharp chance on 10 minutes.

Steels were held to a goalless draw at Bracken Moor by a Rugby side for whom this was only their fifth point of the season to date.

Elsewhere, second-bottom Sheffield FC lost 2-1 at the Dog & Duck against AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

A crowd of 438 saw the Diamonds fall behind to a 14th minute Alec Denton penalty. But a Nabil Shariff brace in the 21st and 43rd minutes – the second also from the spot – turned the game in the home side`s favour.

Carlton Town were beaten 2-0 at home by fellow strugglers Kidsgrove Athletic, the Millers undone by strikes from Harry Clayton and Ben Mills in either half.

Market Drayton Town won 1-0 at home against Belper Town, courtesy of a 68th minute Tyrell Payton effort, while James Dance netted a hat-trick as Chasetown won by the odd goal in five at Northwich Victoria to leap-frog the Vics into ninth spot.

Dance`s goals came in the 3rd, 30th and 68th minutes, with Vics replying through Simon Lakeland after 53 minutes and then a penalty in the last minute from Jamie Hinchcliffe.
