Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Spalding United moved to within a point of EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South leaders Shaw Lane AFC after winning 2-1 at Romulus on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Roms came into game in the hope of putting pressure on the top five but fell behind after 35 minutes when Cenk Acar converted a penalty he`d won after being fouled by Malachi Farquaharson.

And then right, on half-time, Roms suffered a double blow when Bradley Wells doubled the Tulips lead and they had Ricardo Dudley dismissed for two bookings. Their ten-men pulled one back midway through the second half through Liam Hailey but the visitors held firm to take the points back to Lincolnshire.

Newcastle Town are level on points with the Tulips after winning by the same scoreline at mid-table Northwich Victoria.

Lee Cropper gave Town a 15th minute lead from the spot and less than two minutes later, Jonathan Beaumont doubled the visitors` lead. Yaw Gyimah reduced the deficit for Vics, also from the spot, none minutes after the restart.

Chasetown moved into fifth spot after beating bottom-markers Rugby Town 1-0 at The Scholars, Valley`s ninth defeat in twelve games coming courtesy of a 47th minute James Dance effort.

Basford United missed the chance to move into the top five after they were held to a 1-1 home draw by lowly Sheffield FC.

It was a mixed afternoon for Basford`s Tyrell Shannon-Lewis as he gave his side an early eighth minute lead but was shown a straight red card after only 25 minutes after clashing with visiting keeper Chris Butt. Connor Hall pulled Club level seven minutes later but a solid defensive performance ensured that United held on to that point.

Saturday`s only other game saw Belper Town inflict an eighth successive league and cup defeat on Loughborough Dynamo at Christchurch Meadow.

It didn`t start well for the Nailers, however, as they fell behind to a 28th minute Tom Waumsley goal, then saw Ruben Wiggins-Thomas miss a penalty shortly after the break. However, the turning point came midway through the second half when Dymamo had Chris Gray and Danny Brain dismissed.

Eric Graves equalised shortly afterwards and Jonathan Williams put the Nailers ahead in the 78th minute, with Wiggins-Thomas bagging a late brace to make up for his spot-kick miss to make the final score 4-1.
