Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane AFC did their title hopes a power of good by winning 1-0 at their closest rivals Spalding United to move six points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South table on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 253, Gary Burnett`s 19th minute effort eventually proved to be the winner in an entertaining encounter at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.

Third and fourth-placed teams Leek Town and Newcastle Town respectively were both beaten by the weather, but AFC Rushden & Diamonds lost their nineteen-game unbeaten record and fifth spot after going down 5-2 at the Dog & Duck against mid-table Kidsgrove Athletic.

Leading through Sam Brown and Fazel Koriya by the 19th minute, Diamonds were pegged back by half-time by Anthony Malbon and Dan Skelton.

Ten minutes after the break, Harry Clayton gave Grove the lead for the first time and the majority in the 445 crowd were stunned when Malbon went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 67th and 79th minutes.

That allowed Basford United to return into the top five after a comfortable 4-0 home win over bottom-markers Rugby Town.

Reice Bertram gave the Nottingham side a 21st minute lead that Ben Hutchinson`s 47th minute penalty doubled. Tyrell Shannon-Lewis on the hour-mark and Cardell Lubban 12 minutes from time wrapped up victory for Basford.

Second-bottom Loughborough Dynamo picked up another point on their revival, drawing 1-1 at home against ninth-placed Romulus.

Both goals came late on, with Anthony Smith giving Roms an 82nd minute breakthrough, only for Karl Demidh to immediately pull Dynamo level.

Market Drayton Town pulled seven points clear of the drop zone after a 4-2 home win over another side still in need of points, Stamford AFC.

The Daniels had a great start by going 2-0 up inside 12 minutes through Delroy Gordon and Courtney Meade. But Drayton were in front by half-time, courtesy of Glynn Coney on 34 minutes, Will Whieldon three minutes later and Andre James. Jud Ellis scored the only second half goal nine minutes in to make the final score 4-2.

Bedworth United eased to a 4-0 win at the Oval against eighth-placed Sheffield FC to move to within a point of Club and just four off a top five slot.

Jack Jeys proved to be the Greenbacks` hero on the day, netting a first half hat-trick, with Iyseden Christie adding the other on the hour-mark.
