Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane AFC maintained their six-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South table on Saturday with a narrow 1-0 win over Stocksbridge Park Steels, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Jonathan Wafula eventually proved to be Shaw Lane`s hero with a goal five minutes from the end of their home derby.

Second-placed Spalding United won 2-1 at Butlin Road against second-bottom Rugby Town, whose top scorer David Kolodynski gave them a 52nd minute breakthrough.

The lead lasted barely seven minutes as Bradley Wells equalised and then Bradley Barraclough won it for the Tulips on 65 minutes.

Third-placed Newcastle Town, however, were beaten 3-0 at Wincham Park by a Witton Albion side who are seventh, but with lots of games in hand on most around them.

In front of a crowd of 310, Bradley Bauress gave the hosts a 12th minute lead that he eventually doubled 11 minutes into the second half from the penalty spot. Steven Tames rounded things off with Albion`s third 13 minutes from time.

Basford United turned on the style to record a resounding victory at play-off rivals Leek Town at Harrison Park and slip above them in the table to fourth.

A fine performance ended the day in some uncertainty with an injury to last season’s First Division South top keeper Saul Deeney.

With United winning 3-0 at the time, thanks to goals from Courey Grantham after 24 minutes, Kieran Wells 10 minutes later and then Ben Hutchinson three minutes into the second half, it was Hutchinson who took over in goal.

He made a couple of fine stops as Basford went on to net a further brace from Grantham on 66 minutes and Wells on 72 minutes to make it a nap hand.

Sixth-placed AFC Rushden & Diamonds couldn`t take advantage of Leek`s slip though as they lost by the odd goal in five on the 3G at Coles Lane against ninth-placed Romulus.

Diamonds led through a 10th minute Nabil Shariff effort before going 2-1 down to goals from Jordan Francis on 35 minutes and Yohan Rutty-Smith three minutes after the break. Tom Lorraine pulled Diamonds back on level terms 20 minutes from time but Jean-Michel Gueyes won it for Roms five minutes from time.

Sheffield FC moved level on points with Witton and Romulus after winning at home against Lincoln United by the same scoreline.

Goals from Lee Cooksey after three minutes and on-loan Anthony Wilson 10 minutes later gave Club a buffer. Jack McGovern reduced the deficit four minutes later, only for Wilson to notch his second and Club`s third on the half-hour mark. Andy Toyne caused a few nerves when he pulled a second back for United four minutes from time, but the home side held out.

At the opposite end of the table, Northwich Victoria`s miserable season continues with a 2-1 defeat at Kidsgrove Athletic to leave them bottom of the pile, six points behind third-bottom Loughborough Dynamo.

Harry Clayton bagged a brace for Grove in the 37th and 68th minutes, with Drew Matthews pulling one back six minutes from time.

Fourth-bottom Carlton Town lost 2-1 at The Moat to Gresley FC.

Matt Melbourne put the Moatmen in front after 17 minutes. But Lawrence Gorman looked to have earned the Nottingham outfit a point when he levelled 10 minutes from time, only for Reece Morris to pop up with Gresley`s winner in stoppage time.

Chasetown beat Market Drayton Town 5-1 at The Scholars with Josh Ruff helping himself to a hat-trick, topped and tailed by Mitch Piggon and Jermaine Johnson, Jud Ellis netting a consolation for the Shropshire side.

And Stamford AFC edged out Bedworth United 2-1 at the Zeeco Stadium with goals from Karl Whymark after 25 minutes and Courtney Meade 18 minutes from time after Jack Jeys had equalised right on half-time for the Greenbacks.
