Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

The wet weather prevented the top two in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League First Division South from making any further progress but it did allow the chasing pack to attempt to make up ground, writes Steve Whitney.

And in the main, they all did, with third-placed Witton Albion moving to within four points of second-placed Spalding United and ten of leaders Shaw Lane AFC with games in hand on both.

They edged a 1-0 Wincham Park victory over Bedworth United, Rob Hopley leaving it late for Albion in front of a crowd of 333 with his winner in the 81st minute.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds are now fourth, a point behind Witton, after a 2-1 win at fellow top five hopefuls Sheffield FC.

A crowd of 376 saw Ben Farrell give Diamonds an eighth minute lead that Tom Lorraine eventually added to after 65 minutes. James Gregory made for a nervy finale when he pulled one back for Club nine minutes from time.

Newcastle Town are fifth after they won 1-0 at The Moat against Gresley FC, courtesy of a 32nd minute Tom Unwin goal.

Basford United dropped out of the top five after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Coles Lane by Romulus, who are ninth.

But Basford led 2-0 with goals from Courey Grantham and a Ben Hutchinson penalty both coming just before the break. Malachi Farquharson reduced the arrears on the hour-mark and then Jordan Francis levelled from the spot 13 minutes from the end.

Elsewhere, Josh Rae and Jordan Wilson scored in either half to earn Carlton Town a good 2-0 win at mid-table Kidsgrove Athletic, while Rugby Town moved out of the bottom two after a best-of-five win at Market Drayton Town.

Rugby led 3-0 at half-time with a brace from David Kolodynski and one from Trey Braithwaite. Drayton pulled two back through Will Whieldon and Glynn Coney but ran out of time to find a leveller.

Belper Town and Stocksbridge Park Steels shared a goalless Christchurch Meadow draw while Lincoln United won 3-1 at Chasetown thanks to a Jack McGovern double after Conner Robinson`s 52nd minute opener – Liam Holt replying.
