Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

As in its sister division, the race for the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's First Division South title is down to just two contenders, current leaders Shaw Lane AFC holding a single point advantage over Witton Albion, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And it was Albion who pulled closer on Saturday after the table-toppers were held to a 2-2 home draw by mid-table Bedworth United and they won 3-2 at Wincham Park against Chasetown.

However, it could have been worse for Shaw Lane as they trailed the Greenbacks 2-0 going into the final 10 minutes.

Bedworth took the lead in the 17th minute through Jack Jeys, who lobbed the keeper from a tight angle. And after 65 minutes, the visitors went two-up when Iyseden Christie headed in a free-kick from Luke Rowe.

Shaw Lane pulled one back in the 80th minute through Oscar Radford after scramble in goal area. And the leaders got a rather fortuitous equaliser five minutes later when Ryan Qualter`s corner went straight in.

Albion hosted another side who could play in a relaxed manner with little apart from pride and final placings to go for.

Rob Hopley gave the hosts a 10th minute lead that the Scholars` Liam Holt cancelled out after 26 minutes. Five minutes later, Chasetown were in front through Jack Langston`s penalty. But five minutes after half-time, Karl Noon levelled and then Bradley Bauress grabbed a crucial winner after 67 minutes.

Who makes the remaining play-off places is between Spalding United, Newcastle Town and Basford United, who occupy the current top five spots, as well as AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Leek Town and outsiders Lincoln United and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Spalding were beaten 2-0 at Bracken Moor by Steels, for whom Matt Reay after 19 minutes and Brodie Litchfield after 69 minutes were on target.

Newcastle were 1-0 home winners over third-bottom Rugby Town, thanks to a 68th minute Jordan Cole effort, and Basford went goal crazy in beating Belper Town 7-1 at home.

There was little sign of what was to follow as Basford started slowly and actually fell behind to a 13th minute Evan Garnett goal. But Ben Hutchinson`s brace took them into the break in front before a second half goal blitz gave Basford their biggest win of the season.

Hutchinson went on to complete his hat-trick, and Matt Thornhill, Tyrell Shannon-Lewis, Kieran Wells and Kieran Fenton all got in on the act.

Diamonds were only slightly behind Basford in the goal stakes as they beat second-bottom Northwich Victoria 6-1 at the Dog & Duck in front of a crowd of 604.

Three goals in the opening 16 minutes killed Vics off as Jack Bowen, Oliver Brown-Hill and top scorer Nabil Sharrif were all on the mark. Bowen added his second a couple of minutes before the break and, after Dave Short had pulled one back for Vics early in the second half, Sharrif and Quigley added two more to make it a round half-dozen.

Tim Grice bagged a brace of penalties to help Leek to a 3-1 Harrison Park win over Stamford AFC.

Sam Grimshaw opened the hosts` account after six minutes and Grice scored in the 22nd and 69th minutes, Grant Ryan sandwiching a 58th minute reply for the Daniels.

Lincoln won 3-1 at the Moat against Gresley FC, taking a 16th minute lead through Conner Robinson and a 2-0 lead eight minutes later, thanks to Josh Nichol.

Leandro Browne pulled the Moatmen back into the contest in the 26th minute but the next goal was crucial and it didn`t come until stoppage time at the end of the game, Matt Cotton scoring for the visitors.

Romulus ended Kidsgrove Athletic`s outside interests in the top five race after a 3-1 Coles Lane win in which Jordan Francis bagged a brace and Ricky Hill a third from the spot – Harry Clayton replying for the visitors.

And Ben Wallace`s 34th minute effort earned fourth-bottom but safe Carlton Town a 1-0 win at home to Market Drayton Town.
