Saturday's First South action review

By David Watters

Newly-promoted Cleethorpes Town and Basford United march on in the EVO-STIK League South, both making it six wins from their six league matches so far on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Clee were 2-0 home winners over yet-to-win Market Drayton Town with Liam Dickens bagging a brace in the sixth and 76th minutes.

Basford also won at home, but it was a best-of-five success against relegated Frickley Athletic.

The Nottinghamshire side led through Liam Hearn`s 15th minute opener which Jacob Hazel cancelled out eight minutes later. Kieran Wells quickly restored the hosts` lead but Gavin Allott`s equaliser just before the hour-mark looked as though it was going to be enough to earn the Blues a point, at least until Ben Hutchinson popped up with a stoppage time winner for Martin Carruthers` side.

Gresley FC are the only other side yet to find a win in 2017-18 as they went down 3-1 at The Moat to Leek Town, whose Tim Grice scored the only first half goal after 37 minutes.

Jordan Johnson netted a second on 68 minutes and Rob Stevenson a third in the 81st minute, with Matt Melbourne replying four minutes later.

Romulus, Kidsgrove Athletic and Sheffield FC all recorded their first wins of the new campaign on Saturday.

The Roms saw off Lincoln United 3-0 at Coles Lane with goals from Romario Martin in the 21st and 26th minutes and Mark Branch immediately after half-time, while Grove won 1-0 at Carlton Town, courtesy of a goal from Jonathan Beaumont just past the hour-mark.

And Club edged out new boys Peterborough Sports, whose Avelino Viera gave them a fifth minute lead on their first ever visit to the world's oldest club.

And when Josh Sanders made it 2-0 just before the break, it looked bleak for the home side. But Richard Adams pulled one back five minutes after the break and then a brace from James Gregory in the 62nd and 66th minutes won it for Sheffield.

Gary King was another two-goal home hero for Spalding United in a 2-1 win against Bedworth United, whose reply was a Bradley Maslen-Jones own goal 10 minutes from time.

Loughborough Dynamo recorded their second win of the season, 3-1 at home against Stamford AFC.

Liam Adams broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half for the visitors but Ali Smith levelled on 65 minutes and then Karl Demidh on 72 minutes and Paolo Piliero in stoppage time killed the Daniels off.

Corby Town continue to struggle after relegation and were beaten 1-0 at Steel Park by Newcastle Town, for whom Jon Higham`s 27th minute penalty proved decisive.

Belper Town are also struggling to get going this term and were beaten 2-1 at Christchurch Meadow by Chasetown, who came back from being a seventh minute Chris Budrys goal down to win, thanks to Muzi Nduna after 19 minutes and George Cater six minutes into the second half.

Elsewhere, Stocksbridge Park Steels and newcomers Alvechurch shared a 2-2 Bracken Moor draw in the day`s other game.

Joe Lumsden broke the deadlock to put Steels ahead on the hour-mark. Daniel Dubidat equalised after 79 minutes, only for Matt Reay to restore the home side`s lead seven minutes later. But Josh March earned `Church a point with a last-minute leveller.
