Saturday's North Division action review

By David Watters

South Shields reclaimed top spot in the EVO-STIK League North table on Saturday night by edging out Mossley AFC while overnight leaders Bamber Bridge were being beaten by Ossett Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In dreadful conditions on the edge of the Pennines at Seel Park, this could have been a really tricky test for Shields. But they eventually came through with flying colours, taking an early seventh minute lead through Barrie Smith.

Tom Dean equalised though five minutes later and Jack Tuohy put the Lilywhites in front six minutes before the break. And Mossley held that lead until the 87th minute when Julio Arca beats his man in midfield and then fired into the bottom corner of the net from 20 yards.

Many teams would have settled for a draw so late on but Shields poured forward looking for a winner which arrived just two minutes later when Jamie Holmes knocked in a free-kick from close range.

Ossett Town recovered from the disappointment of bowing out of the Emirates FA Cup in a replay to National League Solihull Moors in midweek to inflict only a second defeat of the season on Bamber Bridge, Danny South's 13th minute effort eventually proving to be enough for Grant Black's side at Ingfield.

The top two now possess a six-point lead over the chasing pack with Glossop North End and Scarborough Athletic – third and fourth respectively after both dropped points on Saturday.

The Hillmen lost 3-2 at Trafford, whose James Dean bagged a brace in the sixth and eighth minutes. Jude Oyibo and Courtney Meppen-Walter scored either side of the break to pull Glossop back on level terms but Steve Mason won it for the Greater Manchester side 14 minutes from time.

Scarborough were twice pegged back by hosts Kendal Town at a wild, wet and windy Parkside.

Danny Stimpson gave Boro a 23rd minute lead that Anthony Lynch cancelled out a minute after half-time. Jimmy Beadle restored the visitors` lead on the hour-mark before Richard Seear earned the Mintcakes a point 11 minutes from time.

Prescot Cables and Hyde United occupy the two other top six spots.

Cables edged out Clitheroe by the odd goal in five at Valerie Park, racing into a 2-0 lead through Josh Klein-Davies after two minutes and a Jordan Wynne penalty in the 17th.

A James McCulloch own goal reduced the deficit in the 28th minute, only for Josef Faux to make it 3-1 just seven minutes into the second half. Charlie Russell pulled a second back for the Blues in the 71st minute but they weren`t able to find another leveller.

Hyde made light work of struggling Brighouse Town, running out 5-1 winners at Ewen Fields in front of a crowd of 377.

Tom Pratt proved to be the Tigers` match-winner with a hat-trick, with Harry Coates and Luke Porritt topping and tailing that – Matty Ord replying for Town.

The Tigers` Tameside neighbours Droylsden are just a point behind in seventh after a 2-0 Butcher`s Arms win over second-bottom Ossett Albion, thanks to Danny Ventre three minutes after the break and Shaun Holden after 69 minutes.

Goole AFC remain bottom after going down to a 3-2 defeat at Atherton Collieres, who came back from being a 22nd minute Marcus Edwards goal down to win.

The goals came courtesy of Richard Smith right on half-time, then Ben Hardcastle and Jordan Cover within a minute of each other midway through the second half. Terry Barwick gave the Vikings a chance when he pulled a second back 10 minutes from time.

Akil Grier gave Radcliffe Borough an early third minute lead at home to Colwyn Bay, whose Danny Andrews equalised three minutes after half-time. But just seven minutes later, Callum Grogan`s second for Boro proved enough to earn the spoils with a 2-1 win.

Skelmersdale United pulled themselves up to 19th in the table after winning 2-1 at Tadcaster Albion.

Alaster Redmayne gave Skem the boost of an early seventh minute lead that Josh Greening eventually cancelled out on 66 minutes. But Andy Owens won it for the visitors – only their third win of the campaign to date – nine minutes later.

And Colne produced their best win of the season at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium to prevent hosts Ramsbottom United from moving into the top six.

Danny Wilkins` 18th minute effort for the visitors separated the teams at half-time before an Oliver Crankshaw brace and a Lee Gaskell goal in the final 20 minutes took the game away from Rammy.
