Saturday's Premier Division action

By David Watters

Nantwich Town moved to the top of the EVO-STIK League's fledgling Premier Division table on Saturday night following a 5-2 win over win-less Lancaster City, writes Steve Whitney at Non League Today

Callum Saunders gave the Dabbers the boost of an early eighth minute lead at the Weaver Stadium. He doubled his and the hosts` tally after 41 minutes and then Danny Glover made it 3-0 at half-time with a third goal right on the whistle.

Rob Wilson pulled one back for the Dolly Blues on the hour-mark and then Sam Bailey reduced the deficit to just one four minutes later. But Glover`s second after 83 minutes was followed by Saunders completing his hat-trick in time added on to make it a nap hand for Nantwich.

Of the teams that played on Saturday after the Emirates FA Cup reduced the top flight's programme, Grantham Town and Stalybridge Celtic remain unbeaten after three games.

Grantham inflicted a first defeat on promoted Scarborough Athletic, 1-0 at The Meres, courtesy of a goal from Jack McGovern eight minutes from time.

Stalybridge shared a 0-0 draw at Cantilever Park against Warrington Town. In contrast, joining Lancaster in being win-less so far in 2018-19 are Stafford Rangers, Marine AFC and Buxton.

Stafford lost 3-0 at Mariners Park against promoted South Shields in front of a crowd of 1,363.

Gavin Cogden put the Mariners in front after 33 minutes and Luke Jones received a second yellow card on 57 minutes to leave Rangers with ten-men. Robbie Briggs added a second from the penalty spot with 68 minutes gone on the clock before Carl Finnigan wrapped up the win with a third with three minutes remaining.

Marine went down 4-1 at home to promoted Basford United as Martin Carruthers and his side bagged a first victory since coming up.

Kieran Fenton gave the Nottinghamshire side an early sixth minute lead that Craig Carney cancelled out after 37 minutes. But a Nathan Watson brace on 62 and 67 minutes and one from Courey Grantham 10 minutes later sealed Basford`s first win at Step 3 level.

Buxton may be still looking for a win, but they picked up a useful point from a 1-1 draw at Borough Park against Workington AFC, whose Sam Joel cancelled out Jude Oyibo`s 58th minute opener with 10 minutes remaining.

Relegated Gainsborough Trinity seem to be finding their feet and won 2-1 at Keys Park against Hednesford Town.

Trinity led through Ashley Worsfold`s 38th minute strike until two minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game when Alex Simmons doubled their lead, with Mike Nelson`s reply coming two minutes later.

The day's only other league game saw Witton Albion earn a first win and inflict a first defeat on Whitby Town, a goal from Tom Owens three minutes from time winning it for Albion at the Turnbull Ground.
