Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Ashton United, Marine AFC, newly-promoted Stafford Rangers and Whitby Town are all still unbeaten in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division following Saturday`s round of matches, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And there were first wins for Nantwich Town, Grantham Town and another of the newcomers, Coalville Town, while Frickley Athletic remain bottom of the fledgling table after a third successive defeat.

Ashton inflicted a first defeat on relegated Hednesford Town at Hurst Cross.

Tunji Moses, son of former Manchester United midfielder Remi, opened the scoring after 13 minutes. But it wasn`t until 10 minutes from time that the hosts made sure of the points with a Chris Baguley second.

The Mariners remain unbeaten but dropped their first points of the season after being held to a 1-1 home draw by Rushall Olympic.

Will Smart gave the hosts a good start with the opening goal in the 11th minute. The Pics equalised six minutes after half-time through Marlon Walters, and they held firm despite a straight red card for defender Zak Martin on 70 minutes for a reckless challenge.

Stafford Rangers hosted Frickley in only their second game after having their match against Ilkeston FC cancelled.

And they edged out the point-less Yorkshire side by the odd goal in five at Marston Road. Jake Jones gave Rangers a 15th minute lead that Nathan Curtis cancelled out right on the stroke of half-time.

George Bowerman restored the home side`s lead seven minutes after the break, only for Tyler Williams to pull Frickley back on terms once more on the hour-mark. But a Greg Pearson own goal 10 minutes from time sealed Rangers` first win and a third successive defeat for the Blues.

Corby Town haven`t found it easy after relegation from National League North and have only two points from two draws after Whitby – like Stafford, playing only their second game due to Ilkeston`s suspension - earned a first win, courtesy of Dale Hopson`s 72nd minute penalty in dreadfully windy conditions at the Turnbull Ground.

Nantwich recorded an opening win in emphatic fashion at Causeway Lane against Matlock Town, who had drawn their other two games.

Sean Cooke gave the Dabbers a 21st minute lead that Steve Jones doubled just before the break. Jones added a third nine minutes after the restart and then Josh Gordon made absolutely sure with a fourth with 11 minutes remaining.

Grantham also recorded a first win, and also away from home, beating newly-promoted Warrington Town, thanks to Ben Saunders` effort five minutes before half-time at Cantilever Park.

Another promoted side, Coalville, inflicted a first defeat on Buxton, who had won their opening two matches.

Danny Burns gave the visiting Bucks the lead on the hour-mark at Owen Street. But seven minutes later, Bradley Munn equalised and then Nathan Watson grabbed the Ravens` winner four minutes from time.

Mickleover Sports, promoted Spennymoor Town and Blyth Spartans all recorded second victories, while Workington AFC were beaten for the first time this season.

Mickleover beat Skelmersdale United, who had drawn their two other games, 3-1 in Derbyshire with goals from Brodie Litchfield after 18 minutes, Adam Baskerville a minute before the break and Litchfield again 17 minutes from the end – all after Benito Lowe had given Skem an early fourth minute lead.

Like Skem, Sutton Coldfield Town had opened up with two draws but were beaten 3-0 at the Brewery Field by Spennymoor, for whom Mark Anderson broke the deadlock 10 minutes after half-time. A Joe Tait penalty after 64 minutes and Anderson again a minute from time settled the points.

Blyth enjoyed a nap hand at The Grove against a Halesowen Town side yet to record a win.

Matty Pattison opened his Spartans account with a 25-yard free-kick in the 22nd minute before Daniel Bragoli was dismissed for a second yellow card at the end of the first half. Daniel Maguire’s two goals on 61 and 73 minutes came either side of Pattison’s second on 68 minutes and a header from defender Ryan Hutchinson on 65 minutes.

And Tyrell Shannon-Lewis` effort eight minutes into the second half earned Barwell a first three-point haul and a first defeat on Workington at Borough Park.
