Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

On a Saturday when the weather intervened again, Blyth Spartans took advantage to return to the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a Croft Park crowd of 545, goals from Robbie Dale two minutes after the break and from Steve Turnbull on the hour-mark eventually saw off mid-table Nantwich Town.

Fellow contenders Buxton and Rushall Olympic`s games were both victims of the freezing weather but Whitby Town and Spennymoor Town failed to take advantage, with the Seasiders losing 2-0 at The Grove to lowly Halesowen Town.

Tristan Dunkley gave the Yeltz a 37th minute lead that George Bowerman eventually added to in stoppage time at the end of the game.

Spennymoor could only manage a 1-1 draw at the Marine Travel Arena against another side in the bottom half, Marine AFC.

It was a case of goals at either end of the game, with the Mariners being boosted by an early fourth minute opener, but Moors grabbing a point with a last-gasp Graeme Armstrong equaliser.

Workington AFC moved to within a point of the Moors in sixth after a comprehensive 4-1 win over Mickleover Sports at Borough Park.

The Reds had to come back from being a 20th minute Lewis Burgin goal down to win, thanks to a Dave Symington penalty three minutes after the break.

Symington went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 50th and 57th minutes – the third also from the spot – with Rob Wilson sandwiching a fourth goal in nine minutes.

Stourbridge, with games in hand on those above, moved to within two points of Workington in seventh after a comfortable 4-0 win at Stormy Corner against bottom-markers Skelmersdale United.

Kristian Green gave the Glassboys a 22nd minute lead that Luke Benbow doubled six minutes later. A Dylan Smith own goal made it 3-0 with 34 minutes gone, and Chris Lait made it game over with a fourth less than three minutes later.

Grantham Town could have gone into seventh spot with a win at The Meres against Barwell but were held to a 2-2 draw which at least maintains their nine-game unbeaten run.

And they had to come back from being an early second minute Callum Ball goal down. Lee Shaw equalised 11 minutes into the second half, only for Liam Kay to restore the Canaries` lead with 20 minutes to go. Felipe Barcelos levelled for the Gingerbreads seven minutes from time.

Sutton Coldfield Town moved to within three points of the safety-mark after a `six-pointer` win at Coles Lane against a now second-bottom Ilkeston FC, Max Wright`s goal right on the half-time whistle proving decisive for the Royals.

Corby Town made it four games unbeaten and are in now in third bottom spot after a goalless draw at Steel Park with Warrington Town.
