Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans extended their lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division table to eight points after they won 4-1 at Croft Park against Matlock Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 682, a Gladiators outfit looking to push towards the top five themselves, held out until two minutes into the second half when Luke Armstrong broke the deadlock for Spartans.

But just two minutes later, Marc Newsham equalised and then the last 11 minutes saw the home side sail way with goals from Robbie Dale, Jarrett Rivers and Daniel Maguire.

They extended their lead as Buxton dropped two home points and also lost second place to Workington AFC, who beat fellow top five side Whitby Town.

The Bucks were held to a 3-3 thriller at Silverlands by mid-table Warrington Town, who salvaged a draw very late on.

The Wire led inside the opening minute through Michael Monaghan, but trailed 3-1 after Liam Hardy equalised right on half-time and then Joel Bembo-Leta on 49 minutes and Joe McGee on 65 minutes, took the home side clear. But goals in the 89th and 90th minutes from Monaghan again and Dylan Vassallo earned the visitors a share of the spoils.

A crowd of 463 at Borough Park saw Rob Wilson give the Reds an early 5th minute lead against the Seasiders.

Scott Allison added a second eight minutes before the break and a third 13 minutes from time, with Sam Joel making it 4-0 in the final seconds.

With Spennymoor Town`s game at Skelmersdale United being off, Stourbridge had a great chance to return to the top five when they travelled to Coles Lane to play bottom four side Sutton Coldfield Town. However, it turned out to be an afternoon to forget for the Glassboys as Sutton deservedly ran out emphatic 4-1 winners.

Having gone five League games without conceding a goal, the Glassboys were hit with a four-goal blitz in the space of 25 second half minutes.

Former Stourbridge man Sean Geddes opened the floodgates from the penalty spot on 52 minutes after Jack Duggan had been judged to have pulled his man down, and David Howarth then added a hat-trick with three excellent finishes on 59, 65 and 77 minutes.

Archer gave the travelling Glassboys support something to cheer five minutes from time but the match had long since been settled by then.

Rushall Olympic also blew an opportunity to return to the play-off places as they went down to a 3-1 Dales Lane defeat to a Nantwich Town side who are now ninth and just a couple of points behind Spennymoor themselves.

After the Pics led through Aaron Forde`s 36th minute opener, the Dabbers went on to win it with goals from Sean Cooke after 50 and 79 minutes and a third in stoppage time from Matty Bell.

Goals from Felipe Barcelos after 22 minutes and Lee Shaw after 55 minutes made it thirteen games unbeaten for Grantham Town, who are now eighth and just a point behind fifth spot.

New loan signing Jack Dyche had equalised for visiting Ashton United in the 31st minute.

Second-bottom Ilkeston FC are now eleven points adrift of the safety-mark after going down to a 2-1 defeat at Kirkby Road to Barwell, whose Callum Ball gave them a 21st minute lead.

Dexter Atkinson equalised four minutes later but Brady Hickey won it for the Canaries nine minutes from time.

Corby Town`s revival continued and they are now only four points from fifth-bottom Frickley Athletic after beating Hednesford Town by the odd goal in five at Steel Park in front of a crowd of 431.

Stefan Moore gave the Steelmen a great start with a goal inside three minutes. Vinny Mukendi equalised on 27 minutes, only for Moore to restore the hosts` lead within five minutes. Tom Thorley levelled matters once more three minutes after the restart, but Aaron Brown`s 85th minute third won it for the Steelmen.

Frickley were pulled back towards trouble after losing 3-1 at Owen Street to Coalville Town.

And that`s after leading through on-loan striker Waide Fairhurst after 21 minutes. Nathan Watson levelled from the spot four minutes later and then second half goals from Massiah McDonald after 56 minutes and Edilson Antonio 11 minutes from time sealed the Ravens win.

Halesowen Town pulled eight points clear of the drop zone after a 4-2 win at The Grove against out-of-form Mickleover Sports.

Lee Chilton put the Yeltz ahead inside the opening minute – and that was that until the hour-mark when Tyler Blake equalised. Two minutes later Tristan Dunkley restored the home side`s lead and he made it 3-1 in the 76th minute, with Ethan Delaney`s 88th minute fourth rendering Blake`s second in stoppage time as just a consolation.

Marine AFC`s Matt Hamilton scored the only goal of the game at home against Stafford Rangers after just five minutes in the day`s other game.
