Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans comprehensively maintained their nine-point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division table following a 5-0 rout of second-bottom Ilkeston FC on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Jarrett Rivers gave Spartans an early fifth minute lead at the New Manor Ground that Robbie Dale doubled three minutes before the break. Ten minutes into the second period and Rivers grabbed his second before on-loan Adam Wrightson made it 4-0 just past the hour-mark. Daniel Maguire made it a nap hand six minutes later.

Buxton, Whitby Town and Stourbridge all won to remain in second, third and fourth respectively – but it`s extremely tight below Blyth, with only four points separating second from ninth-placed Rushall Olympic.

Buxton won 2-1 at Marston Road against Stafford Rangers.

In front of a crowd of 674, Richard Batchelor gave Rangers a 21st minute lead they held until the 69th minute when Liam Hardy equalised. The Darlington 1883 man pounced to score the winner 12 minutes from time.

Alan Rogers` first game in charge of Skelmersdale United was a tough test at the Turnbull Ground against Whitby, but they gave a decent account of themselves, only a 54th minute Dave Carson goal separating the sides at the final whistle.

Two goals from Luke Benbow were enough to give Stourbridge the three points against a stubborn Coalville Town outfit at the War Memorial Ground in front of a crowd of 733.

Benbow headed home from a Tom Tonks corner on the half-hour mark and was in the right place to slide the ball home in stoppage time at the end of the game after substitute Ethan Jones - on his debut - had seen two efforts blocked by Ravens' keeper Matt Coton.

Grantham Town climbed into the final play-off spot after winning 2-1 at The Brewery Field against fellow top five contenders Spennymoor Town.

After going one-down early on to a fifth minute Glen Taylor effort, the Gingerbreads enjoyed an incredible second half. Luke Shaw turned the match with a brace in two minutes around the hour-mark.

Michael Hollingsworth was brought down in the box, and Shaw placed the ball put the Gingerbreads level from the resulting penalty. And soon afterwards, Shaw again was the man who put the visitors in front and make it fifteen games unbeaten.

Workington AFC were another play-off contender to suffer defeat, 4-0 at Mickleover Sports.

Tyler Blake broke the deadlock to give Sports the lead three minutes after half-time. Andy Dales quickly doubled that lead four minutes later and Blake went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 76th and 85th minutes.

Nantwich Town are now seventh after a 4-1 Weaver Stadium victory over Marine AFC.

The Dabbers got off to a great start when Curtis Jones put them in front inside 60 seconds. Sean Cooke then bagged a brace in the 19th and 30th minutes to make it 3-0. And, after Zac Thompson reduced the arrears seven minutes into the second half, Cooke completed his hat-trick 16 minutes from time.

Matlock Town are now five points adrift of Grantham but possess games in hand so cannot be ruled out following their last-gasp 2-1 win at Causeway Lane against Halesowen Town.

Michael Williams had the Gladiators ahead after 37 minutes. James Bennett-Tindall pulled the Yeltz back on terms 20 minutes from time, and that looked as though it was going to be enough for a point, until Nico Degirolamo popped up with a stoppage time winner.

Corby Town are now just a point behind fifth-bottom Frickley Athletic after winning an early relegation `six-pointer` 2-0 at Westfield Lane.

The Steelmen got off to a great start when youngster Jordan Crawford put them in front in the opening minute. The experienced Phil Trainer eventually doubled the visitors` lead on 63 minutes.

Ashton United did the Steelmen a favour too by beating third-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town 3-1 at Hurst Cross.

On-loan Jack Dyche gave the home side an early sixth minute lead that Matty Chadwick added to on the half-hour-mark. And that was it until stoppage time when the sides swapped late goals – Chadwick with his second and Richard Sho-Silva for the Royals.

The day`s other game saw Hednesford Town and Barwell share a 1-1 Keys Park draw.

Tom Thorley gave the Pitmen a 31st minute lead that Luke Barlone cancelled out on 66 minutes to leave the Canaries a point and a place above their hosts in eleventh.
