Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Blyth Spartans hold a massive sixteen point lead at the top of the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Premier Division table following Saturday`s 4-2 home win over Corby Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Corby travelled north having lost just once in ten outings under Gary Mills and David Bell`s management, and led after just four minutes through Stefan Moore.

However, by the time Giuseppe Iaciofano notched their second in stoppage time at the end of the game, the Steelmen were 4-1 down.

Daniel Maguire pulled the leaders level 10 minutes after the visitors` opener but it wasn`t until 20 minutes from time when Sean Reid put the Spartans in front. Maguire again after 79 minutes and Luke Armstrong in the 86th minute stretched their advantage in front of a Croft Park crowd of 644.

Stourbridge and Nantwich Town are a distant second and third respectively after Buxton`s game was postponed, the Glassboys enjoying an excellent 3-1 win at windy Whitby Town, who are now a point behind the top five in seventh.

The Seasiders had a good start, however, with Dale Hopson putting them in front after less than three minutes. It wasn`t until 11 minutes into the second half that Luke Benbow equalised and then Tom Tonks gave the visitors the lead in the 74th minute – Ethan Jones stretching that to 3-1 just five minutes later.

The Dabbers also won on their travels, 2-1 at Keys Park against Hednesford Town, whose Danny Glover also had them in the lead after just three minutes.

But like Whitby, the Pitmen were unable to add to their early lead and Tom Peers equalised after 14 minutes and then a Kyle Haynes own goal 10 minutes after half-time eventually won it for the visitors.

Matlock Town missed the chance to go second when they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Mickleover Sports in front of a crowd of 524.

Veteran Clinton Morrison had the visitors ahead after 32 minutes, but Marcus Dinanga maintained his good form with the leveller from the penalty spot right on half-time. Tyler Blake then restored Sports` lead just past the hour-mark, only for Michael Williams to level matters again less than three minutes later.

It`s extremely tight below Blyth, with only six points separating second-placed Stourbridge from twelfth-placed Barwell.

Grantham Town are sixth and recovered from losing their long unbeaten run last weekend after a 2-2 draw with another side in the mix, Workington AFC.

Josh Calvert gave the Reds a 24th minute lead at the Meres and Luke Shaw levelled eight minutes before the break. Two minutes after it, Calvert restored the visitors` lead, with Rhys Lewis rescuing the Gingerbreads in stoppage time.

Spennymoor Town, Rushall Olympic, Warrington Town and Barwell are also in that scrum for a top five spot, the Moors also dropping two points in a 3-3 draw at Stafford Rangers in front of a crowd of 568 at Marston Road.

Joe Tait had the visitors ahead after 12 minutes but only for three minutes as Kyle Perry levelled. Glen Taylor restored Moors` lead on 23 minutes and Nathan Fisher stretched it to 3-1 in the 30th minute. A minute into the second half, Perry notched his second for Rangers and Sam Griffiths equalised with seven minutes of the second half gone.

Rushall were another to draw – 1-1 at Dales Lane to Ashton United, whose on-loan Jack Dyche put them in front just before the interval before Gurjit Singh levelled for the Pics after 68 minutes.

Barwell were the fifth of the group to draw on Saturday – 1-1 at The Grove against Halesowen Town, whose Daniel Bragoli gave them a 57th minute breakthrough that recent recruit Pearson Mwanyongo cancelled out 14 minutes from time.

That all meant that Warrington Town`s 2-1 win at Cantilever Park against Coalville Town moved them up to eleventh spot.

Recent signing Ruben Jerome again proved to be the Wire`s hero with a brace in the final eight minutes after the Ravens had led from the 10th minute through Rory Coleman.

The day`s other game saw Marine AFC and Frickley Athletic, both sitting just above the drop zone, share six goals at the Marine Travel Arena in Tommy Lawson`s first game in charge of the Mariners.

Two goals in a minute from Tyler Williams and Ross Barrows had the visitors in front by the 16th minute. James Foley reduced the deficit right on half-time, only for Joe Pugh to make it 3-1 to the Blues six minutes after the break. Lawson then saw some battling spirit from his new charges as Callum Mahoney and Danny Mitchley salvaged a draw with goals in the last 10 minutes.
