Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Altrincham are a point clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League Premier table following a 4-0 cruise at bottom-markers Sutton Coldfield Town on Saturday at Coles Lane, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Robins raced into a 3-0 lead inside 11 minutes when Jordan Hulme turned smartly to open the scoring in the second minute. He then won the ball which led to a corner from which James Jones headed in after a knock-on to make it 2-0 in the ninth minute.

Next, from Shaun Densmore’s free-kick, Jake Moult headed home a third goal two minutes later. Alty spurned several further chances in the second half before they finally added a fourth, nine minutes from time with a second for Hulme.

Warrington Town remain in second spot after winning 3-1 at Mickleover Sports.

The Wire had to come back from being a 35th minute Evan Garnett goal down, crucially equalising five minutes later through Bradley Barnes. Sean Williams then gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot on 66 minutes and Tony Gray added a third 10 minutes later.

Grantham Town are third after a 3-0 win at Buxton with Lee Shaw opening the scoring on 26 minutes when he nipped in at the front post to beat the keeper.

He was eventually on the scoresheet again in the 78th minute when he converted a penalty which Jordan Hempenstall had won. And it was hat-trick time for Shaw when he tapped home a cross from Michael Hollingsworth two minutes from time.

Stourbridge dropped to eighth in the table following defeat at Sheerien Park against fourth-placed Shaw Lane AFC.

Luke Benbow scored his fourth goal since returning to the Glassboys on loan but his 62nd minute strike was merely a consolation. The hosts took the lead in the 20th minute when visiting skipper Paul McCone tripped Chib Chilaka on the edge of the area and Spencer Harris sent Matt Gould the wrong way from the spot.

Harris grabbed his and the Ducks’ second goal five minutes later, firing in a 25-yard effort that gave Gould no chance. There was a lengthy delay early in the second half after one of the referee’s assistants went down injured and Chilaka headed home from a Alex Byrne cross just after the restart on the hour-mark.

Farsley Celtic complete the top five after they won 2-0 at Marston Road against mid-table Stafford Rangers.

New signing Nathan Cartman took only 10 minutes to open his account for Farsley. Gibraltar international Adam Priestley eventually doubled the visitors` lead 11 minutes from time to confirm victory.

Farsley slipped above Ashton United in the table after the Robins were held to a 1-1 draw at Hurst Cross by mid-table Barwell.

But the scoreline hides the drama that took place! It was goalless when Ashton were reduced to ten-men in the 76th minute after the referee sent-off Aaron Chalmers for a second yellow card offence.

And then in the 84th minute, Ashton went down to nine men after Makhosini Khanye was shown a straight red card. Amazingly, the nine-men took the lead in the first minute of stoppage time when Dan Pilkington kept his nerve to send the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot. But in the fourth minute of time added on, Matt Stenson equalised with the very last kick of the game!

Workington AFC are seventh after beating Rushall Olympic 4-1 at Borough Park.

Matt Douglas gave the Reds a 38th minute interval lead. But Kacy Butterfield equalised just after the hour-mark. Scott Allison restored the home side`s lead after 76 minutes and then two goals in the final two minutes from Nathan Waterson and Allison again sealed their win.

Clayton McDonald scored after just four minutes at the Weaver Stadium against Whitby Town. And that eventually proved to be enough for the Dabbers.

Nathan Watson gave visiting Coalville Town a 16th minute lead at the Giant Axe against Lancaster City in what turned out to be a 4-2 win for the hosts.

The Dolly Blues wiped that advantage out by half-time through a Craig Carney brace in the 25th and 45th minutes. Ryan Winder eventually added a third for the home side 15 minutes from time, with Charlie Bailey making it game over with the hosts` fourth six minutes later, rendering Danny Jenno`s 88th minute second for the Ravens as just a consolation.

Halesowen Town are now second-bottom after drawing 1-1 at The Grove against fellow strugglers Marine AFC.

James Murray gave the Mariners a 69th minute breakthrough but Ivor Lawton rescued a point for the Yeltz seven minutes from time. Not far away, Hednesford Town sealed a 2-1 Keys Park victory over another struggler, Stalybridge Celtic.

James Fitzgibbon put the Pitmen ahead after 12 minutes but Ollie Roberts looked as though he`d earned Celtic a point with a 64th minute equaliser only for Danny Glover to pop up with Hednesford`s stoppage time winner.

It was a see-saw encounter between Witton Albion and Matlock Town at Wincham Park.

Rob Hopley gave Albion a 12th minute lead that Shaun Harrad cancelled out nine minutes later. Paul Williams took the home side into the break in front after a 42nd minute goal. Just 3 minutes into the second half though, the Gladiators were back on level terms through loanee Ricardo German.

And then four minutes later, Adam Yates put Matlock in front for the first time – but it lasted barely three minutes as Tom Owens scored what turned out to be the final goal of the game to see it end 3-3.
