Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Basford United`s march towards the EVO-STIK League South title continued on Saturday with a 2-1 at the Lyme Valley Stadium over Newcastle Town to stay ten points clear of the chasing pack, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

It was the Nottinghamshire side's experienced striker Liam Hearn who scored both of their goals in the 31st and then the 85th minutes, with Aaron Bott netting a stoppage time consolation for Castle.

Newcomers Alvechurch are second after they edged a thriller 3-2 at Lye Meadow against third-bottom Sheffield FC.

Julian Lawrence gave visiting Club an early 8th minute lead that Tom Turton cancelled out from the penalty spot four minutes before half-time. Danny Dubidat then gave `Church a 56th minute lead that Grant Ryan levelled in the 71st minute. Dubidat won it for the home side in the 86th minute.

Frickley Athletic are now third after they inflicted a 6-0 hammering on Market Drayton Town on their own patch.

Gavin Allott completed a hat-trick to take his tally to 100 for the club in several spells, Cameron Hough, Jacob Hazel and Danny Frost were the other Blues on target.

Frickley moved about Cleethorpes Town, who shared a 1-1 draw at Steel Park against a Corby Town side who are now seventh.

In front of 471, Danny North gave Clee the lead just before the break but Sam Mulready levelled 10 minutes after the restart and the Steelmen came close to winning it late on.

Stocksbridge Park Steels and Bedworth United complete the top six and both won on Saturday.

Steels were 2-1 Bracken Moor victors over Carlton Town, thanks to Rory Coleman`s penalty just before half-time and a second from Brodie Litchfield six minutes from time – Jordan Wilson replying in stoppage time.

Bedworth completed a 3-0 Oval win over Lincoln United, courtesy of Luke Keen`s brace in the 22nd and 50th minutes and a last-gasp Khaellen Bailey-Nicholls third.

Leek Town remain in contention after a 3-1 Harrison Park win over bottom side Romulus with goals from Rob Stevenson after 23 minutes, Daniel Tricket-Smith six minutes later and Tim Grice on 63 minutes – Malachi Farquharson replying in time added on.

Second-bottom Gresley FC shocked hosts Spalding United by winning away for the first time this season to date.

After Gary King had given the Tulips a 17th minute lead, a Matt Melbourne brace in the 51st and 85th minutes sealed the Moatmen`s victory.

Hosts Peterborough Sports trailed to a brace of goals from Jacob Lovatt and a Jack Langston spot-kick in a 2-3 reverse at home to Chasetown by the hour-mark but the newcomers almost came back to earn a point as they scored two in the last 18 minutes from Mark Jones and Avelino Viera.

Dylan Garnett gave struggling and managerless Belper Town an eighth minute lead in a 3-1 win at Loughborough Dynamo.

Karl Demidh levelled on the half-hour mark but the Nailers won it with Alex Steadman after 42 minutes and Kieran O`Connell 20 minutes from time.

Stamford AFC enjoyed a good 4-1 Zeeco Stadium win over Kidsgrove Athletic in the day`s other game.

The Daniels led 2-0 at the break, thanks to Sam Hollis and Pearson Mwanyongo`s penalty. Rob Morgan made it 3-0 shortly after the break and Mwanyongo`s second spot-kick killed the game off just after the hour-mark – Anthony Malbon having netted Grove`s consolation.
