Saturday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

With leaders Altrincham`s game against Mickleover Sports off due to Saturday's wet weather, it was a chance for the chasing pack to make up some of the gap at the top at the EVO-STIK League, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

However, a draw for second and third-placed teams Grantham Town and Shaw Lane AFC respectively meant the Robins` lead is still a healthy six points.

The Gingerbreads were not at their best as they hosted Witton Albion at The Meres and in the end were grateful to a stoppage time equaliser from Rhys Lewis after Steven Tames had given the visitors a 76th minute lead.

Shaw Lane were held by the same scoreline by Stourbridge at the War Memorial Ground.

It was the Ducks’ first ever visit and they took only four minutes to take the lead through Alex Byrne. Despite recovering and being the better side for much of the game before equalising just after half-time through Luke Benbow, they were forced to settle for a point.

Hednesford Town made it nine games unbeaten and fifth spot as they fought back to beat Farsley Celtic 3-1 on a wet and miserable day at Throstle Nest.

Goals from Joe Fitzpatrick right on half-time, Danny Glover on 78 minutes and James Lawrie in stoppage time saw Hednesford take the three points, despite Ben Atkinson’s early fifth minute opener, leaving the Pitmen’s manager Rob Smith delighted: “I’m delighted, Farsley are a good side, we’ve been starting games poorly which we did again today.

“The key to the game was getting the goal before half-time, and then we came on strong in the second-half. The lads have put a great shift in and it’s one of the most difficult places to come, so to get a win is great. We’re enjoying the ride at the moment and we’ll see where it takes us.”

Inconsistent Barwell are now only three points off a play-off spot in ninth place after winning 2-1 at Kirkby Road against Buxton.

Brady Hickey gave the Canaries a 21st minute lead that Liam Hardy cancelled out from the penalty spot in the 34th minute. Matt Stenson`s second a minute before the brake proved enough for Barwell in the end.

At the other end of the table, the bottom two shared a 1-1 draw at Bower Fold, leaving Sutton Coldfield Town still bottom, a point only separating them from Stalybridge Celtic.

Connor Hughes gave Celtic a 32nd minute lead that Justin Richards levelled from the spot in the 76th minute.

That was bad news for third-bottom Halesowen Town, who suffered a 5-0 defeat at the Turnbull Ground at the hands of Whitby Town, who are now unbeaten in four.

It was goalless at the break but the Seasiders took just six minutes to take the lead in the second period through Steve Snaith. Junior Mondal doubled that on 58 minutes and nine minutes later, James Fairley made it 3-0. Mondal`s second came just a minute later, with Snaith bagging his second 10 minutes from time.

Matlock Town recovered from back-to-back defeats to win 4-3 at home against Lancaster City.

In a see-saw encounter, Lee Bennett gave the Gladiators a 13th minute lead that Shaun Harrad doubled 15 minutes later. Sam Bailey pulled one back after 34 minutes.

However, a second from Harrad in the 80th minute looked to have won it for the hosts. But Paul Jarvis two minutes later and then Craig Carney in the 87th minute, had seemingly earned the Dolly Blues an unlikely point until Harry Vince popped up with Matlock`s winner in stoppage time!

Nantwich Town were comfortable 3-0 winners at Owen Street against Coalville Town.

Sean Cooke after seven minutes and David Forbes five minutes before half-time had the Dabbers in command. And a third from Joe Mwasile sealed it on 66 minutes.

Elsewhere, the game between Marine AFC and Stafford Rangers finished 1-1 at the Marine Travel Arena.

Rangers led at the break, thanks to Massiah McDonald`s goal a minute before the half-time whistle. Danny Mitchley equalised 15 minutes from time.
