Saturday's Premier Division review

By David Watters

With the Emirates FA Cup taking centre stage on Saturday, there were five fixtures in the Evo-Stik League Premier, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

And they saw newly-promoted Witton Albion suffer their first defeat of the season to date, going down 2-1 at Owen Street against Coalville Town.

Albion could have gone to the top of the table had they won but fell behind to an early sixth minute Tom McGlinchey effort. Rob Hopley replied just four minutes later, only for Steve Towers to score what proved to be the Ravens` winner nine minutes into the second half.

Another Premier newcomer, Farsley Celtic, moved into fourth spot after beating bottom-markers Halesowen Town 3-1 at Throstle Nest.

Ryan Watson gave the home side a 27th minute lead that Richard Marshall quickly doubled three minutes later. Lee Chilton reduced the deficit in the 68th minute but a third from experienced striker James Walshaw 10 minutes from time sealed Farsley`s win.

Workington AFC earned only their second three-point haul to date when Conor Tinnion`s 38th minute effort eventually proved enough at Borough Park against Hednesford Tow.

The two other matches in the top flight on Saturday both ended two apiece.

Matlock Town found themselves a goal down in the 10th minute to Danny Mitchley for visiting Marine AFC.

Shaun Harrad equalised six minutes after half-time and the same player gave the Gladiators the lead from the penalty spot after 68 minutes. But Adam Hughes salvaged a point for the Mariners six minutes from time.

Dave Carson put Whitby Town ahead at the Turnbull Ground against Sutton Coldfield Town after 20 minutes.

Lee Smith levelled just before the break, only for Carson to net his second to restore the Seasiders` lead just shy of the hour-mark. But the Royals' stellar signing, former Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and Coventry star Marcus Tudgay, equalised in the 84th minute.
