Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

With Basford United on Emirates FA Cup duty, Cleethorpes Town had the opportunity to stretch their advantage at the top of the EVO-STIK League South table on Saturday when they travelled to Leek Town, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

However, Leek became only the second side to prevent the Northern Counties East League champions from winning this season in a goalless encounter at Harrison Park.

Leek are now fourth and above them are Frickley Athletic but the side relegated last season suffered a fifth defeat of the season at Westfield Lane against Bedworth United.

Top scorer Gavin Allott gave the Blues a 20th minute lead but they didn`t score again until stoppage time at the end of the game through Steve Hopewell. By then, the Greenbacks had Luke Keen netting a hat-trick in the 31st, 42nd and 50th minutes and Khaellen Bailey-Nicholls adding the other a minute after half-time.

Corby Town proved the old adage that a team with a caretaker-manager is often dangerous and so it proved as the Steelmen ended a run of one win in 11 games with a 2-1 success against fifth-placed Stocksbridge Park Steels.

With David Bell having been sacked in midweek, director of football Steve Kinniburgh took charge and saw Northampton Town loanee Leon Lobjoit give his side a 25th minute lead. Phil Trainer eventually doubled that lead six minutes from time, and the Steelmen held on, despite Scott Ruthven`s stoppage time reply.

Kaylum Mitchell gave Carlton Town a 25th minute lead at Christchurch Meadow against Belper Town before the Nailers fought back to win 2-1, thanks to Eric Graves after 32 minutes and Alex Steadman 17 minutes from time.

Lincoln United led through Rob Norris after 35 minutes in a 2-1 win at Ashby Avenue against Kidsgrove Athletic, Andy Toyne adding a second for the hosts right on the stroke of half-time before Lee Cropper mustered a last-gasp effort.

A goal from Tyrell McFarlane just before half-time earned Market Drayton Town a 1-0 win at home to Spalding United, their third victory of the season.

Saturday's remaining games were all drawn with Chasetown and Loughborough Dynamo failing to find a goal between them at The Scholars.

Rob Morgan gave Stamford AFC the lead five minutes before half-time at the Zeeco Stadium against Newcastle Town, whose Luke Askey equalised 10 minutes into the second period.

Ben Algar put visiting Sheffield FC in front after 11 minutes against second-bottom Romulus before the Roms levelled through Romario Martin on 39 minutes and then Louis Harris put the hosts in front right on half-time. But Club remained a place above the Roms when Jack Brownell equalised 20 minutes from time.

Bottom-markers Gresley FC picked up a sixth point to date with a 1-1 draw at newcomers Peterborough Sports, Louis Danquah giving the Moatmen a 10th minute lead that Liam Marshall cancelled out six minutes before half-time.
