Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

Basford United moved a whopping ten points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League South table on Saturday after beating Spalding United 2-1 at Greenwich Avenue, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Tulips are also expected to be challenging come the end of the season, and gifted the Nottinghamshire side an early seventh minute lead with an Adam Jackson own goal.

Matt Thornhill eventually doubled Basford`s lead on 69 minutes, with Gary King netting a stoppage time consolation for the visitors.

Frickley Athletic are now fourth after ending Corby Town`s six-game winning run under caretaker-manager Steve Kinniburgh.

Danny Frost gave the Blues a 26th minute lead that Jacob Hazel eventually added to after 66 minutes and it was the same player who made the points safe with a third 10 minutes from the end.

Frickley moved above Stocksbridge Park Steels after they suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat at bottom side Romulus – their first win in seven league games.

And they had to come back from being an early sixth minute Joe Lumsden goal down, thanks to Drew Alton after 26 minutes, Cameron Lee right on half-time and Harry Harris 11 minutes from time, with Lumsden causing a few nerves with a second for Steels in the 81st minute.

A penalty from Ben Hutchinson after 22 minutes sealed Belper Town`s win at Christchurch Meadow against new boys Peterborough Sports, while Tolani Omotola and Jack Andrews notched in either half to earn Loughborough Dynamo victory at Carlton Town.

Luke Keen bagged a brace in the 37th and 60th minutes to seal Bedworth United`s 2-1 win at The Moat against second-bottom Gresley FC, for whom Matt Melbourne replied 12 minutes from time.

Another of the strugglers, Sheffield FC, won a seven-goal thriller at home to Newcastle Town.

Aaron Bott had opened the scoring for `Castle on 40 minutes, only for Club`s Tyler Williams to level four minutes later. Grant Ryan then put the home side ahead after 61 minutes, only for Sam Wilson to equalise seven minutes later.

But Williams again on 73 minutes and James Gregory nine minutes later made it 4-2 to the hosts, with Bott`s second in stoppage time causing a nervy finale.

Just one goal at Ashby Avenue and it came from Market Drayton Town`s Jud Ellis to earn them a 1-0 verdict against hosts Lincoln United.
