Saturday's South Division action review

By David Watters

There are still several issues to be settled in the EVO-STIK League South heading into the final week of the season following Saturday`s round of fixtures, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Basford United have already been confirmed as champions but who goes up alongside them automatically is still just about open, the play-off situation is extremely tight, and who goes down will go to the final games.

Basford were presented with the championship trophy on Saturday after their 3-2 win at Mill Street against play-off chasing Lincoln United.

Deon Meikle gave the hosts a 32nd minute lead that Liam Hearn eventually doubled on the hour-mark. Jack Wightwick reduced the deficit in the 64th minute and then Matt Cotton pulled the Whites back on level terms with eight minutes remaining.

But the champions sealed victory and ensured the party wasn't going to be spoiled with a penalty converted by Hearn in the 87th minute.

That defeat left Lincoln three points behind the top six with two games remaining while Alvechurch are in pole position to go up automatically after they won not far away at the Bill Stokeld Stadium against Carlton Town.

But they had to come back from being behind at half-time to a 19th minute Louis Danquah effort. Ashley Carter equalised three minuets after the break and Josh March put `Church ahead eight minutes later, with Luke Yates adding a third on the hour-mark.

Alvechurch hold a six-point lead over third-placed Frickley Athletic, who will be ruing the loss of three points now. Both have three games this coming week, and although Frickley will be hoping for favours to make second spot, they maintained hope with a 6-1 battering of lowly Gresley FC at The Moat – and that after being behind to an early fourth minute Danny Quinn goal too!

A Jamie Barrett own goal pulled the visitors back on level terms in the 16th minute, but it was once Gavin Allott put Frickley in front on the hour-mark that Gresley caved in and conceded four more. Allott went on to score three more in the 66th, 75th and then in stoppage time from the spot, with Dan Burns sandwiching the other on 68 minutes.

Bedworth United would have secured a top six spot had they won at the Coach & Horses against Sheffield FC but after a 1-1 draw will still need a point or so from their final two games. Waide Fairhurst broke the deadlock to give Club a 48th minute lead that Kyle Cartwright cancelled out 17 minutes from time.

Chasetown and Leek Town occupy the two other play-off spots, with Stamford AFC and Lincoln also in the race.

Like Bedworth, Chasetown could have done with all three points from their visit to Cleethorpes Town rather than one from a 1-1 draw in which Nick Wellecomme`s 35th minute opener for the Scholars was cancelled out by in-form Brody Robertson 10 minutes into the second half.

Leek won 3-1 at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields against Spalding United, thanks to Tim Grice on 44 and 49 minutes and Dan Trickett-Smith in stoppage time – all after the Tulips had led through Ben Davison`s 18th minute effort.

However, Stamford`s hopes took a real blow when they suffered a defeat by the same scoreline at second-bottom Romulus, who really had to win this one to have a chance of staying up.

And they did so, thanks to Malachi Farquharson and Yohan Rutty-Smith with two goals in a minute shortly before the half-hour mark and then Romario Martin two minutes from time after Ollie Brown-Hill had pulled one back for the Daniels eight minutes earlier.

Roms stay a point in front of Market Drayton Town but have only one game remaining to the Shropshire side`s three. And Drayton must have thought they had all three points from their visit to Steel Park to play Corby Town when they led 4-0.

But the Steelmen produced a stunning comeback to draw 4-4 draw in front of a crowd of 423. The visitors raced into a 4-0 lead after just 46 minutes with goals from Lyndon Campbell, Jud Ellis, Joe Cuff and a Dean McBride own goal.

But sub Jake Bettles scored with his first touch on 52 minutes and that sparked the fightback as Corby pulled back three more from Paul Malone, Bettles again and Phil Trainer with 10 minutes still to play and both sides had chances to win it after that.

Elsewhere, Peterborough Sports are finishing their first season at this level well and won 2-1 at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels, courtesy of Dan Lawlor after 19 minutes and Mark Jones 13 minutes from time after Rory Coleman had levelled three minutes into the second half.

Kyle Diskin, Ollie Jepson and former Nailer Eric Graves were all on the mark as Kidsgrove Athletic won 3-1 at out-of-form Belper Town, whose Will Dennis replied, while Loughborough Dynamo and Newcastle Town shared a typical end-of-season 0-0 draw.
