Saturday's South Division review

By David Watters

There were seven matches in the EVO-STIK League South on Saturday and one of them saw a new club record defeat, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

That came at league newcomers Peterborough Sports as the United Counties League champions were dismantled 9-1 at home by an impressive Stocksbridge Park Steels outfit.

Sports were handed a club record defeat and a complete lesson by a rampant Steels side. The visitors were dominant all over the pitch and were quickly ahead when Brodie Litchfield ended a fine move on six minutes and he doubled the advantage 12 minutes later.

But the difference between the sides became more evident in the second half as the clinical visitors netted seven more. The floodgates opened as Litchfield went on to complete his hat-trick, Joe Lumsden grabbed four goals and Rory Coleman a brace. Josh Moreman scored what can barely be described as a consolation for Sports on the hour-mark.

In contrast, Leek Town and Spalding United shared a 0-0 draw at Harrison Park.

Just up the A1 from Peterborough, Stamford AFC were 3-0 winners against Romulus at the Zeeco Stadium.

Jake Duffy gave the Daniels a seventh minute lead that Eliot Putman doubled 10 minutes later. Rob Morgan made sure with a third 10 minutes into the second half.

Jamie McAteer gave Bedworth United an early eighth minute lead at the Oval against Sheffield FC before veteran Iyseden Christie added a second for the Greenbacks eight minutes into the second period.

Market Drayton Town remain the only side without a win after going down 2-1 at home to another side struggling for form, relegated Corby Town.

The Steelmen had to come back from being a 43rd minute Jud Ellis goal down to win, thanks to recent signing Ben Diamond on the hour-mark and Lee Beeson in the 77th minute.

Loughborough Dynamo enjoyed a good 2-1 win at the Lyme Valley Stadium against Newcastle Town.

A Luke Askey own goal gave the visitors a 20th minute lead that Karl Demidh doubled 12 minutes later. Jordan Cole reduced the deficit six minutes after the break but Castle weren`t able to find a leveller.

Elsewhere, relegated Frickley Athletic moved into third spot after a comfortable 3-0 Westfield Lane win over struggling Gresley FC.

A Josh Nodder goal after 20 minutes gave the hosts the advantage that Jacob Hazel doubled just before half-time. Jameel Ible made it game over with number three on 66 minutes.
