Saturday's South Division review

By David Watters

Newly-promoted Cleethorpes Town and Basford United both maintained their unbeaten starts to the EVO-STIK League South season on Saturday, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Clee hit second-bottom Romulus for six at home, Matt Bloomer`s 14th minute opener being the only first half goal. Marc Cooper, Jack Richardson, Danny North, Jon Oglesby and Andy Taylor all got in on the act in the second half to make it a convincing win for the Northern Counties East League champions.

Basford were pushed a little harder at Sheffield FC, whose Jack Brownell gave them a 39th minute lead from the penalty spot. Kieran Wells equalised six minutes after the break and James Reid scored what proved to be Basford`s winner four minutes later.

Stamford AFC stormed to their biggest victory of the season after a stunning 5-1 away win at new boys Alvechurch, who had only lost once before kick-off.

The home side gifted the Daniels the lead with a 10th minute Ashley Carter own goal. The Stamford advantage was doubled 12 minutes later by Jordan Smith with Henry Eze adding a third eight minutes into the second period.

The home side reduced the arrears through Javia Roberts midway through the second half but Jon Challinor restored Stamford’s three-goal lead after 76 minutes. The scoring was completed 10 minutes from time by Liam Adams who netted his third goal since joining on loan from Boston United.

There were two seven-goal thrillers among Saturday's results with Gresley going down 4-3 at home to Lincoln United.

Gresley FC had only won once before entertaining the Whites at The Moat and were ahead with an 18th minute Louis Danquah goal. Jack Wighwick restored parity on 35 minutes and then Ryan Oliver put the visitors in front five minutes after half-time.

Jason Law levelled four minutes later, only for Andy Toyne and Oliver to make it 4-2 with two goals in five minutes just after the hour-mark. New signing Ryan Robbins pulled one back 20 minutes from time but the Moatmen weren’t able to find another leveller.

It was the same scoreline not too far away between Loughborough Dynamo and Corby Town.

The Steelmen were seemingly heading for a second win in a row after two goals from Paul Malone and one from Jason Lee put them 3-0 up inside the first 40 minutes.

But a capitulation followed as Dynamo pulled a goal back just before the break through Paulo Piliero. They then hit three in 15 minutes immediately after the restart with a second for Piliero and singles for Ali Smith and Luke Smithson to condemn the Steelmen to a fifth league defeat of the season.

A mere five goals at Kidsgrove Athletic though as they edged out third-placed Frickley Athletic 3-2.

Jacob Hazel opened the scoring to give the visitors a 10th minute lead but an Anthony Malbon brace in the 63rd and 73rd minutes after Jon Beaumont had equalised in the 33rd minute took Grove away, despite Jameel Ible`s last-gasp second for the Blues.

Peterborough Sports recovered from the recent hammering by Stocksbridge Park Steels to win 3-0 at Newcastle Town.

Mark Jones after 14 minutes and Josh Moreman on the half-hour mark gave Sports breathing space and Jordan MacLeod made sure with a third on the hour-mark.

A Gary King penalty eight minutes into the second period put Spalding United in the lead at the Sir Halley Stewart Fields against Chasetown, who conceded a second to Nathan Whitehead nine minutes from time.

After netting nine last time out, Stocksbridge couldn`t find one at Bracken Moor against a Market Drayton Town side who had won only once so far, Kevin Buxton`s early eighth minute strike ensuring a second win for the Shropshire visitors.

Alex Steadman put Belper Town in front at the Oval against Bedworth United in the 17th minute in a 2-0 success. Leandro Browne added a second for the Nailers six minutes before the break and the Greenbacks were unable to find a response.

Elsewhere, Jordan Johnson grabbed a stoppage time winner for Leek Town in their 1-0 win at Carlton Town.
