Saturday's West Division review

By David Watters

EVO-STIK League West kicked-off on Saturday with both newly-promoted sides, Widnes and Runcorn Linnets, losing their opening matches, writes Pitchero at Non League Today.

Widnes went down 2-0 at home to Jon Macken`s Radcliffe FC side, whose Ben Wharton after eight minutes and Elliot Rokka nine minutes later were on the mark

Widnes' former North West Counties Football League rivals Runcorn lost 4-2 at the Butcher`s Arms against Droylsden, whose Sefton Gonzales bagged a brace in the 19th and 72nd minutes, topped and tailed by goals from Liam Caddick and Sam Madeley – the unlucky Freddie Potter`s brace on 53 and 82 minutes therefore counting for nothing.

Neighbours Kidsgrove Athletic and Leek Town both started well – both winning 4-0 on their travels.

Grove hit four without reply at Shawbridge against Clitheroe with Anthony Malbon recording the first hat-trick of the new season with goals in the 22nd, 25th and 82nd minutes, with Jordan Cole adding the other on 32 minutes.

Leek`s Dan Trickett-Smith bagged a brace in their win at Skelmersdale United.

Niall Maguire had given Neil Baker`s side the perfect start with a goal inside the opening minute and it was 3-0 by just the ninth minute with Trickett-Smith's first and Tim Grice's strike. Trickett-Smith's second came just past the hour-mark.

Mossley AFC also started the new campaign with an away win, 3-1 at The Scholars against Chasetown.

The Scholars led through Jack Langston`s 27th minute opener until the 62nd minute when Mike Fish equalised from the penalty spot. Andy Keogh put the Lilywhites in front on 88 minutes and Chasetown had Ryan Wynter dismissed for two bookings before Liam Ellis added Mossley's third in time added on. More bad news followed for Chasetown after it was revealed that Oli Hayward had suffered a broken leg.

Ben Hardcastle scored both of Atherton Collieries` goals in the 38th and 47th minutes to seal an away win at Glossop North End, whilst their Lancashire neighbours Colne also won on their travels, 2-1 at the Lyme Valley Stadium against Newcastle Town.

Castle's Aaron Bott levelled from the spot within a minute of James Steele putting the visitors in front with a third minute own goal and Bradley Lynch's second for Colne 10 minutes after the break proved to be enough.

A goal from James Barrigan seven minutes into the second half sealed Colwyn Bay`s win at Llanelian Road against Kendal Town, while Ramsbottom United started well with a 2-1 Harry Williams Riverside Stadium victory over Market Drayton Town.

Jack Higgs put Rammy in front after 31 minutes, only for Charlie Knowles to level within four minutes. Luke Thompson popped up with the home side`s winner eight minutes from time.

And Trafford also won at Shawe View by the same scoreline against Prescot Cables.

Lloyd Dean gave them an early fourth minute lead but it wasn`t until 11 minutes from time that Aaron Burns levelled from the spot. Three minutes later, and Ali Brown won it for the hosts.
