S/East Round-Up: 10-goal thriller in South East Division

By James Gordon

There was a 10-goal thriller between Carlton Town and Wisbech Town over the weekend in the BetVictor S/East Division.

Carlton came from two goals behind to beat Wisbech 6-4 at Stoke Lane.

It was the first time the hosts had been involved in a 10-goal game since the 2003/04 season, and it gave the Millers their first home league win since September.

Wisbech remain bottom of the table, despite goals from Danny Draper (2), Charley Sanders and Tiago Nassanculo, while for Carlton it was goals for Tom Maddison (2), Aaron Opoku, Tyler Blake (2) and Daryl Thomas.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Daryl Thomas told Carlton Town TV, after scoring his first goal back at the club.

“As a striker, you thrive on scoring goals. I have a different role to last time I was here, so it’s more of a player-coach. But it was important today to get the win.

“Being 2-0 down after 20 minutes, it was always an uphill task but the boys, after a few harsh words at half-time from the gaffer, managed to turn it around.

“On a personal point, I’m just here to help Tom and Mark and any opportunity to get on the pitch to help my teammates and to score goals in the process is brilliant, but the main thing was getting the win today.”

At the top of the table on 51 points, Leek Town claimed a 4-1 victory over Market Drayton Town, with all goals coming from the table toppers.

Leek took a 2-0 first half lead thanks to a brace from Tim Grice, while Oliver Harrison scored an own goal early in the second period to make it 2-1.

However, that didn’t panic the leading side, who added a further two from Lewis Short and Grice completing his hat-trick.

In second place, Stamford displayed a dominant performance to claim a 3-0 win over Lincoln United thanks to goals from James Hicks, Dec O’Hare and Ollie Brown-Hill.

Just two points separate the top two sides.

In the play-offs, Cleethorpes defeated Sheffield 2-0, Belper Town claimed a 1-0 victory over Sutton Coldfield Town.

Just above the relegation spot on 16 points, Newcastle fell1-0 short to Frickley Athletic, with Jonathan Margetts scoring the only goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute.

In mid-table, Spalding United overtook Saturday’s opponents Ilkeston on the league table following a 1-0 win, while Glossop North End defeated Worksop Town 2-0 to also overtake them in the league.

Stocksbridge Park Steels took a step closer to a play-off spot following a 2-1 win over Loughborough Dynamo, with all goals coming in the first half from LukeMangham and Scott Ruthven for the hosts, and Curtis Burrows for the visitors.

Kidsgrove Athletic also had a successful weekend, defeating Chasetown 1-0.
