Sheehan steps down despite plea to stay

Anthony Sheehan has ended his short reign as manager of Witton Albion despite being asked to reconsider his decision to resign in the aftermath of Saturday’s heavy defeat at Belper Town in the EVO-STIK League’s top flight.

The 32-year-old, pictured, confirmed his decision to quit Wincham Park after just five games at the helm on Sunday following the 5-0 reverse at Christchurch Meadow.

In a statement released by the Premier Division club, officials said they were ‘sorry’ to see Sheehan stick by his decision go after he was asked to think again on Saturday night by chairman Mark Harris. The club say they will not be re-advertising the post at this stage and will make a further announcement in due course.

The club said: "After discussions today Anthony has maintained that he wishes to resign as first team manager. The club would like to publically thank Anthony for the effort he made whilst in the role of manager."

A tough-tackling midfielder and defender, Sheehan joined the Albs from Colwyn Bay in 2011. He took temporary charge along with Nigel Deeley and Dave Andrews following the departure of Brian Pritchard at the end of August and was appointed permanently two weeks later after an unbeaten run that saw the Albs climb to third in the table.
