Step 4 round-up: Saturday 18 March

By James Gordon

Recap the latest action from Step 4 of the Northern Premier League…

Worksop Town secured their return to Step 3 and were crowned champions of the Pitching In NPL East Division after a 4-1 win at home to Tadcaster Albion.

Liam Hughes scored twice for the Tigers, with further second half goals coming from Vaughan Redford and Tavonga Kuleya as they extended their unbeaten league run to a remarkable 30 matches.

In the play-off race just behind them, Hebburn Town and Stockton Town, currently second and third, fell to defeats, with fourth-placed Long Eaton United scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner against the former to secure a 3-2 win.

In the fight for survival, Carlton Town edged Cleethorpes Town 3-2 to pick up a vital three points on their travels, while Shildon left it late to clinch an important 2-1 win away at Lincoln United.

It proved to be a day of high drama for NPL West Division leaders Macclesfield, who scored a 90th minute winner from the penalty spot to defeat Runcorn Linnets 3-2.

That result moves the Silkmen 13 points clear of second-placed Leek Town, who were without a game on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Clitheroe remain in the final play-off spot, despite being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Prescot Cables.

That is because Witton Albion were beaten 1-0 by Trafford.

It proved to be a tough afternoon for the sides struggling in the West Division, with the bottom three all tasting defeat.

In the NPL Midlands Division, Stamford stretched their lead at the top of the table to nine points thanks to a 3-1 win at home to Sporting Khalsa.

The two sides below them both dropped points, with Halesowen Town beaten 1-0 by Shepshed Dynamo and Spalding United only managing to secure a goalless draw at Bedworth United.

After a 9-0 loss at home to Spalding United in midweek, Daventry Town’s tough week continued as they lost 4-0 to Coleshill Town, who are now just one point adrift of the play-off places.
