FA Groundsmen of the Year Awards

Loughborough Dynamo’s Kris Nurse was an unexpected guest on BBC Radio Leicestershire’s Non-League Show after it emerged that the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League striker is the running to be named as the FA’s Groundsman of the Year!

The 28-year-old, pictured, better known for the talents that saw him grab two goals in Dynamo’s 4-0 First Division South win over Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday, hit the airwaves on Tuesday night’s weekly show to talk about his horticultural skills tending the Nanpantan Sports Ground.

Nurse, along with the groundsmen at AFC Fylde, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Trafford and Witton Albion, will be flying the flag for the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League at the 2014 FA Groundsmen of the Year Awards this summer.

The Evo-Stik NPL’s 68 clubs were asked to submit their nominations for the FA’s prestigious annual event in December and the five, chosen by a panel of league judges, will take on each other and their rivals from the Southern League and Isthmian League for the title of FA Step 3-4 Groundsman of the Year.

The next stage of the competition will see on-site assessments at the nominated grounds by the FA's own expert panel, made up of groundsmen from a number of Premier League and Football League clubs.

Nurse is not short of experience. After being released by Notts County as a 20-year-old he learned his trade working with the ground staff at Rolls Royce before joining Loughborough University four years ago to tend their sporting facilities.

The forward is in his second spell with Dynamo after first helping to fire the club to the Midland Football Alliance title in 2008. He returned again last summer after spells with at Quorn and Coalville Town.

Nurse, who is also running the London Marathon in April for Cancer Research UK, was joined on the show by Dynamo’s PR man John Bryson. Listeners heard him quizzed by presenter Ian Stringer on their remarkable 6-5 win at Lincoln last Saturday.
