Striker rejects suitors to resign

Carlton Town

Hot-shot Ruben Wiggins-Thomas committed himself to another Evo-Stik Northern Premier League campaign with Carlton Town on Friday, writes Brian Dennett.

The striker, pictured, scored 27 goals last term and signed a new contract after meeting up with Millers Chairman Mick Garton and Secretary Paul Shelton for successful talks on his return from an African holiday.

First Division South Carlton are delighted to have re-signed their leading goalscorer with a number of clubs known to be in the market for the forward's services and hoping to prize him away from Stoke Lane's Derbyshire Senior Cup winners.

Wigging-Thomas said: "I got a lot of pleasure out of winning the Senior Cup last season and to be honest I have had a few offers over the last few weeks, but my mind was always at Carlton.

"I know the club well, I am happy here and this will be my third season here. I love it with the lads, I like working with management here and I have been given the opportunity to play week in and week out and enjoy my football which is important to me."

Wiggins-Thomas can't wait to get back into action and added: "I will be looking to improve my league goal input next season as I scored lots in the cup but not as many as I would have liked in the league last season. I can’t wait for the season to start and hopefully we will be back competing for promotion."

In other news, Carlton are waiting to find out what fee is agreed for former winger Terry Hawkridge following his departure this week from Conference North Gainsborough Trinity for Scunthorpe United. Although Carlton only received a small fee for the highly-rated winger when he left, they inserted a sell-on clause in the deal and are looking forward to a windfall.
