Success in sight at community day

By David Watters

Success is in sight at Halesowen Town in the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's top flight on Saturday for the long-running campaign of Skelmersdale United fan Alfie Lund to set a new world record for the longest chain of scarfs, shirts and flags.

The nine-year-old is less than a hundred scarves away from overtaking the current record holder in Dubai and the Yeltz are offering half price admission to fans who donate a scarf to help the young Skem supporter break the record and raise awareness of his rare life limiting disorder, MECP2 Duplication syndrome, which means he cannot walk or talk and has profound and complex learning difficulties.

One of only approximately 120 children in the world suffering from the condition, his family and supporters set themselves the challenge of winning a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for football memorabilia nearly four years ago in 2014 to raise the profile of UK charity MECP2 Duplication.

The youngster and the Lund family will be guests of honour at Halesowen Town's 2017 Community Day when they visit the Grove for a second time after collecting more than three miles of scarfs from fans and clubs across the country and around the world.

Last May, Alfie's father Mark Lund collected the Non-League Paper's Unsung Hero accolade at the 2016 National Games Awards at Fulham's Craven Cottage and this week joined the campaign to save relegated Skelmersdale United from extinction with their home at Stormy Corner under threat.

After the support given by member clubs over the last three season, the EVO-STIK NPL backed the discounted ticket offer at the fixturew which will also see commemorative limited edition pin badges on sale for Alfie’s 92nd match on the road.

After losing 1-0 at home to Marine in Tuesday night's relegation clash at the Grove, Yeltz manager John Hill will be focusing the attention of his players on the must-win encounter in the club's fight for survival against already-relegated Skelmersdale United.
