Talks start on building new stadium

EVO-STIK League Workington could soon be sharing a brand new stadium with their local rugby club after meeting with local politicians to discuss potential options for a joint project to put the area firmly on the sporting map.

A brand new state-of-the-art facility could host major events such as the Rugby League World Cup in 2021 and the EVO-STIK League Premier Division club's officials have confirmed that they are now waiting to take the next steps after making a joint approach to Allerdale Borough Council with Workington Town Rugby Football League Club.

The talks on building a sustainable future and better facilities for both clubs were first made public at Allerdale's Civic Dinner at the weekend. According to a statement released by officials at Borough Park on Monday, they are said to be at an early stage with potential sites and designs yet to be agreed upon but will "match and exceed the expectations of supporters".

A statement read: “Discussions are at a very early stage but the positivity has left us excited at what can be achieved. There are many decisions to be made and we are entering discussions with an open mind but will communicate and engage to make this a fully collaborative process.

"We believe this will lead to exciting times for the club and will be working on options available to secure our long-term future. We aim to enhance the experience of our supporters as we strive for successful teams, at all levels, playing under the Workington AFC crest.

“Our ambitions for future growth and development started with a commitment to 'Reds in the Community'. This is growing with a clear indication that there is an abundance of talent locally and facilities need to improve to match the progression.

“Initial discussions suggest it is quite clear that Allerdale Borough Council is keen to support both clubs’ aspirations, matching those of the local authority. They want to provide facilities which the local community can enjoy, which will enhance the town and, along with the new leisure centre, put Workington on the sporting map of Cumbria.

The statement added: “There is a commitment from both clubs to work together to explore a range of options that will improve their facilities, for players and spectators, creating a sound footing for the future.

"It is hoped any proposed scheme would supplement the success of the Workington Leisure Centre. There is a commitment from ABC having recently agreed a capital investment strategy which included plans to improve sporting facilities, a key component in the Council Plan.

“The Council’s capital investment plan outlines a number of possible ways that sporting facilities could be funded but they must be self-sustainable, generate income and attract further investment in the town. It is also our responsibility to ascertain how this will be achieved leading to a brighter financial future for our club."
