The Doodson Sport Cup First Round

The weather hit this week's Doodson Sport Cup competition – the League Cup for Evo-Stik Northern Premier League clubs – but there were one or two interesting results in those ties that did manage to beat the weather, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

None more than at Owen Street on Tuesday where runaway Evo-Stik NPL First Division South leaders Coalville Town were involved in a ten-goal thriller against league rivals Rainworth Miners Welfare.

Coalville exited the competition after a thrilling extra-time encounter and ended the match with only nine-men - with Michael Quirke and Leigh Everitt the men dismissed. Jerome Murdock opened the scoring for Coalville in the 16th minute before Quirke was dismissed for his second bookable offence.

A quickfire double just after the break from Kieron Walker and Karl Slack put Rainworth ahead but Coalville looked to have won it with late goals from debutant Ash Way and top scorer Ryan Robbins.

But a last-gasp strike from Ricky Hanson forced extra-time where, despite Robbins grabbing his second it was Rainworth who went on to claim the win with goals from Lee Cooksey, a Jared Holmes penalty and a second for Walker right at the death.

Evo-Stik NPL First Division North leaders Mossley also bowed out at the First Round stage in dramatic fashion against Warrington Town – also on the own Seel Park pitch.

The Doodson Cup is obviously not high on the list of Mossley manager Steve Halford's priorities, as he made eight changes from the team that turned out against the same opponents three days earlier in the league. However, he would not have anticipated a 7-1 hammering in which a flurry of late goals turned the outcome from slightly disappointing to embarrassing.

The Wire led 3-0 with a Kevin Townson hat-trick when Ben Richardson pulled one back for the home side on 64 minutes. But Phil Doran, Townson again and a Phil Mooney brace completed a trouncing that Mossley fans will hope doesn't have a detrimental effect on their league form.

Elsewhere, recent signing Mark Danks turned back the clock with a virtuoso performance for Sutton Coldfield Town at Coles Lane against Evo-Stik NPL First Division South rivals Loughborough Dynamo.

The much-travelled striker hit all four goals in the Royals 4-2 success, with another debutant, Dynamo's Danny Davidson, bagging both of the visitors' efforts.

The all Evo-Stik NPL First Division North tie between Radcliffe Borough and Clitheroe at Stainton Park produced a nine-goal thriller which the high-flying visitors just edged.

Jamie Baguley gave Boro a fourth minute lead that Simon Nangle immediately cancelled out. The visitors then went 3-1 up by half-time with goals from Marcus Calvert and Scott Bakkor before Jacob Wood reduced the deficit nine minutes into the second half.

Daley Woods on 77 minutes and Nangle again three minutes from time surely put the tie to bed for Clitheroe. Odi Koubemba and Ben Wharton pulled it back to 4-5 in the final couple of minutes, but the Blues held on.

Mickleover Sports won 4-1 at Evo-Stik NPL First Division South rivals Lincoln United's Ashby Avenue, with all five goals coming in the second period – Martin Smyth and Bradley Munn bagging braces for Sports and Simon Mowbray a consolation for the home side.

It took extra-time for Cammell Laird to progress 2-1 at Irongate against Evo-Stik NPL First Division North rivals Bamber Bridge, whose Chris Marlow had cancelled out Joe Holt' 64th minute opener for Laird in stoppage time, only for Jamie Henders to win it for the visitors with a 112th minute penalty.

Burscough beat Evo-Stik First Division North rivals Ramsbottom United by the same scoreline at home but without the need for overtime – Phil Clarke and Niall Cummins scoring inside the opening 16 minutes for the Linnets, with Bernard Morley replying on 64 minutes.

Carlton Town had a good 3-1 win after extra-time at The Grove against Evo-Stik NPL First Division South rivals Halesowen Town.

It was goalless after 90 minutes, but just four minutes into the extra 30 minutes Ruben Wiggins-Thomas gave the Nottinghamshire side the breakthrough, only for Gavin Winsper to level within four minutes for the Yeltz. But Wiggins-Thomas and Josh Thornton won it for Carlton soon after that.

Strugglers Hucknall Town could find no respite in the cup, bowing out 4-0 at Watnall Road to Evo-Stik First Division South rivals Brigg Town, for whom Ryan Paczkowski, Scott Hellewell, Liam Davis and Paul Preston were all on target in the first half.

It took just one Jonathan Hunt effort after five minutes to see Curzon Ashton through at the Giant Axe against Evo-Stik NPL First Division North rivals Lancaster City, while Market Drayton Town enjoyed another away win at Newcastle Town with goals from Tom Rodgers and an Adam Bayley own goal – Nathan Sutton netting a 71st minute consolation for Castle.
