Thursday's North Division action review

By David Watters

South Shields moved three points clear at the top of the EVO-STIK League North table on Thursday night after ending the five-match unbeaten run of hosts Atherton Collieries, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

In front of a crowd of 325, goals from Lee Mason after 13 minutes and then Michael Richardson five minutes into the second half gave Shields their important win.

Scarborough Athletic missed the opportunity to put pressure on second-placed Hyde United when they could only manage a 0-0 draw at the i2i Stadium against Yorkshire neighbours and play-off contenders Tadcaster Albion. The crowd of 913 saw a committed performance from both sides, but no goals.

And Taddy`s draw allowed Colwyn Bay to slip above them into seventh place, four points behind the play-off places, after a 3-0 Llanelian Road win over fifth-placed Prescot Cables, for whom this was a second successive defeat.

Astley Mulholland gave Bay a 33rd minute lead that Danny Bartle doubled right on the stroke of half-time. And then just two minutes into the second period, Bartle`s second made it game over.

Second-bottom Brighouse Town moved seven points clear of bottom-markers Goole AFC after winning a best-of-seven encounter at Ingfield against Ossett Town.

Aaron Martin gave the visitors the boost of an early third minute lead that Anthony Mackie cancelled out within five minutes. Ollie Crowley restored Brighouse`s lead two minutes later and five minutes after that, Martin stretched the visitors' lead to 3-1.

Martin Pembleton took Ossett into the break just one behind when he pulled one back after 22 minutes. Martin completed his hat-trick in the 79th minute, rendering Alex Peterson's second for the home side in stoppage time as just a consolation.

The evening`s other game at the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium between lower mid-table sides Ramsbottom United and Ossett Albion fizzled out into a 0-0 draw.
